Description
Kotonoha Kanade is a fourth-year undergraduate student in the Information section of Saitama University's Science and Research department, working in the Ikeda Laboratory alongside researchers Shinya Yukimura and Ayame Himuro. A formative high school experience ignited her passion for mathematics and science: developing feelings for her math teacher, Keisuke Takahashi, she proposed a conditional date if she achieved a B grade on her test. She succeeded, but during their outing, Takahashi tripped and fell towards her. Kanade's ingrained judo self-defense instincts triggered a forceful shoulder throw, leaving him unconscious and potentially injured. This public incident traumatized her and reinforced her desire to appear "normal" to avoid social ridicule.

Physically, Kanade stands 162 cm tall with light rose or brown hair typically tied in a ponytail using a gold flower hairpin, lilac eyes, and blood type B. She frequently wears a lab coat over a school-uniform-like skirt. Her personality balances a cheerful, sociable exterior with deep-seated insecurities from high school bullying and the Takahashi incident. She actively conceals her true feelings and opinions to fit in, honing an ability to "read the room" and adapt her behavior. This facade occasionally slips around trusted figures like Yukimura and Himuro, though she quickly reinstates it.

Within the lab, she often serves as the "straight man" to Yukimura and Himuro's scientifically convoluted romantic experiments, which she finds baffling, typically extricating herself when discussions become overly abstract or illogical. Despite this, she willingly supports their endeavors, reflecting her loyalty. Her relationships are central: she admires Himuro as an elegant, intelligent older sister figure, sometimes requesting affectionate head-petting to fulfill her longing for sibling companionship. With Yukimura, she initially maintains a respectful senior-junior dynamic. His strictness during her academic preparations, such as presentation rehearsals, ultimately proves beneficial. After he rescues her from a near-rape by delinquents led by Shikijou—using a tactical bluff with water disguised as acid—Kanade develops romantic feelings for him, a revelation uncovered by Himuro in Season 2.

Kanade's character development intensifies during Season 2's confrontation with Shikijou, who targets her to provoke Yukimura. Kidnapped and assaulted, she overcomes her paralysis by drawing on her high school judo training to fight back, symbolizing her reclaiming of agency. This ordeal, coupled with Yukimura and Himuro's contrasting support styles—Yukimura's blunt critiques versus Himuro's gentler encouragement—helps her reject the compulsion to conform to "normalcy." She gradually embraces her identity, including her intellect and interests, without seeking external validation.
