ONA
Description
Chidaruma is the supreme ruler of Hell and the most powerful devil in his world, acting as the creator deity of the setting. He is the oldest being in existence, having come into being before anything else, and out of sheer boredom, he created Hell, the world of magic users, the human world, and even the fundamental concepts of physics, time, life, and death. His immense power is such that he is described as omnipotent, and even weapons capable of killing other devils have no effect on him.
His personality is defined by a profound, ancient boredom and an impulsive nature. He will become completely engrossed in a fleeting interest, such as soap operas or a bet, and dedicate centuries to it before becoming bored and moving on to something new. Chidaruma is capricious and often behaves in a silly, playful, or unpredictable manner to entertain himself. His initial motivation for creating the worlds and life was simply to have something to cure his loneliness and occupy his endless time. For a period, he was fascinated by humans, spending hundreds of years kidnapping them, experimenting on them, and playing with them. Eventually, this interest waned, and he left. When he returned, he found that the humans had been massacred by magic users, their corpses forming a massive pile that eventually turned into a black void he called Hole.
Chidaruma's role in the story is primarily that of a distant, god-like observer who is nevertheless the ultimate architect of the world's suffering and chaos. He rarely acts directly against the main characters, but he created the oppressive system of castes and hierarchies that governs their lives. He is the one who gave En, the most powerful magic user, a second chance at life after En died and went to Hell, marking the beginning of En's rise to power. Later, he closely monitors characters like Ai due to their unusual magical advancements. Ultimately, many of the final events of the series are set in motion by a wager Chidaruma makes with other devils regarding who will be the victor.
He has key relationships with the other devils, whom he allows to become devils to feel less lonely. He values them like companions, even demanding that they have proper refreshments like gyoza at their parties. Despite his fun-loving exterior, he is ruthless and can be cruel. For example, he forced a former devil, Asu, to become a chef again simply to make gyoza for a party. While he allows magic users to become devils, there is a clear hierarchy with himself at the top.
There is a subtle development in Chidaruma's character by the story's end. While he created the system that hurts others out of boredom and loneliness, his defeat does not come from a physical battle. Instead, he undergoes a philosophical shift, becoming a more empathetic being who may begin to dismantle the oppressive hierarchy he himself created.
In terms of appearance, Chidaruma is a towering, non-human figure standing approximately 260 centimeters tall with white skin, red eyes, and no hair. His notable abilities are practically limitless, as he regularly performs feats that defy logic and reality. He can warp reality, manipulate time, and create and destroy concepts at will. He is completely invulnerable to all forms of harm, including attacks that ignore durability, and he can restore others to previous states on a whim. He sometimes carries a Store's Kitchen Knife, a weapon that grows on a creature called Store and can negate the durability of other beings, though he himself is immune to its effects.
