ONA
Description
Nikaidō is a central character in the anime and manga series Dorohedoro. She is a young woman with long blonde hair, blue eyes, and an athletic build. She owns and operates the Hungry Bug, a small family restaurant in the grimy, lawless district known as the Hole. Her specialty is gyoza, which she prepares with great care, and which her friend Kaiman consumes in large quantities without ever paying. This routine is a constant source of comic tension but also reflects the ease and familiarity of their relationship. Nikaidō found Kaiman in a back alley after his head had been transformed into that of a reptile and he had lost all memory of his past. Without hesitation, she took him in, named him, and has since stood by him as his closest ally. Together, they hunt magic users who enter the Hole, hoping to find the one responsible for Kaiman's condition. Nikaidō is portrayed as down-to-earth, straightforward, and fiercely protective of those she cares about. She possesses a dry sense of humor and a pragmatic attitude, but underneath this exterior lies a deep well of personal guilt and unresolved grief. Her primary motivation is the safety and well-being of Kaiman, whom she considers her one and only precious friend. She is willing to risk her life and confront her own traumatic past to help him recover his identity. Her role in the story is multifaceted. She acts as Kaiman's combat partner and guide, but she also functions as a moral anchor, reminding him of his humanity. At the same time, her own hidden nature becomes a major driving force in the plot. It is eventually revealed that Nikaidō is a magic user from the magic world, a secret she has kept even from Kaiman. She was born in the magic world and lost her parents at a young age. She was raised by her aunt and uncle alongside a girl named Yakumo, whom she considered a sister. Her magic is the ability to manipulate time, an exceptionally rare and powerful skill. However, her first attempt to use this power to save Yakumo from a fatal accident ended in disaster, resulting in Yakumo's death and leaving Nikaidō with immense guilt. This tragedy drove her to abandon the magic world and hide her identity in the Hole, where she tried to live as an ordinary human. Her time-manipulation ability has strict limitations. It requires a mechanical device referred to as a magic box, which uses a set of five crystalline bullets. Each bullet represents one use, and the power is finite. When she travels to the past, a duplicate of herself from that timeline exists alongside her, and the future version must eventually replace the past version at the moment of departure, a process that is both physically and emotionally taxing. The repeated use of this power also accelerates her transformation into a devil, a fate she fears but is eventually forced to confront. Key relationships define her journey. Her bond with Kaiman is the emotional core of the series. It is a relationship built on mutual trust and silent understanding, never romantic but profoundly deep. She also has a complex connection with a man named Kawajiri, also known as Asu, a former devil who acts as a mentor figure. He helps her unlock the full potential of her time magic and guides her through the process of devil training. The crime boss En sees Nikaidō's time magic as the key to achieving his own ambitions and becomes obsessed with claiming her power. Her childhood friend Yakumo, though deceased, remains a constant influence, shaping her fears and her sense of responsibility. Across the story, Nikaidō undergoes significant development. She evolves from a person suppressing her true nature into someone who must embrace it. She undergoes an accelerated devil transformation through a combination of intense training with Kawajiri and the consumption of a substance known as devil meat. This grants her greatly enhanced physical abilities, regeneration, and full control over her time magic, but it also changes her appearance, giving her horns and other devil-like features, and alters her personality to a more gleeful and detached state. In the final battle, she confronts and is killed by the entity known as Hole, the physical manifestation of the Hole's curse. She is later revived by the devils and reunited with Kaiman. She thus completes her journey, having faced her past, accepted her power, and protected the friend she treasures above all else. In combat, Nikaidō is exceptionally capable even without magic. She is a highly skilled hand-to-hand fighter, using punches, kicks, and a practical, ruthless efficiency to dispatch opponents. After her devil training, she becomes a formidable superhuman combatant capable of fighting on a scale that rivals the most powerful beings in the series. Her most notable ability, however, remains her capacity to step outside the normal flow of time and reshape events, even at the cost of her own humanity.
