Description
Asirpa is a young Ainu huntress who becomes the central partner and deuteragonist in the search for a hidden cache of gold. Her life changes dramatically after she saves the life of a Japanese soldier named Saichi Sugimoto. When she learns the truth about the gold and its connection to her father’s death, she decides to join Sugimoto on his dangerous quest across Hokkaido. Asirpa is a small-framed girl with dark hair that reaches the middle of her back and distinctive blue eyes with tints of green, a feature she inherited from her father. She traditionally wears a white Ainu robe made from bark called an attus, which features a purple band and traditional swirling motifs. She also wears a purple embroidered headband known as a matanpushi, matching tekunpe hand coverings, and two ninkari earrings that were an heirloom from her mother. For footwear, she uses deerskin boots called yukker, and in cold weather she wears a warm mantle made from wolf fur. She always carries her signature longbow and quiver, along with several knives in carved sheaths.
Asirpa has a complex and multifaceted personality. Initially, she can appear cold and withdrawn, but this exterior quickly melts away once she warms up to someone, revealing a more jovial, playful, and occasionally childish side. She enjoys cooking and is deeply enthusiastic about hunting, but she also likes to tease her companions, especially Sugimoto and their ally Shiraishi. Despite her cheerful demeanor with friends, she possesses a serious and pragmatic understanding of the wilderness. As a hunter, she knows that nature is cruel and that weakness leads to death, so she approaches survival and hunting with a mature and serious attitude. However, she holds strict personal principles, most notably a refusal to murder other people, even when her own life is at stake. She is also deeply respectful of Ainu culture, which reveres nature and views animals as divine beings called kamuy. She always honors her prey and the gifts she takes from nature, and she will never eat the meat of a man-eating animal, believing it to be a wen kamuy, or evil god. At the same time, she considers herself a modern Ainu woman and is not afraid to dismiss certain old customs, such as tattooing her mouth or believing in fortune-telling.
Asirpa's primary motivation stems from a desire to protect the Ainu people and preserve their independence and culture. After a journey to Karafuto and experiencing many revelations, she becomes determined to find the gold not for personal wealth, but to ensure that her people and their traditions will never be erased or forgotten. Her role in the story is that of a guide and teacher, using her extensive knowledge of the Hokkaido wilderness to navigate harsh winters, track prey, and survive. She is the one who copies the tattoos of escaped prisoners onto paper, helping to assemble the map to the gold. She is also the moral anchor for Sugimoto, whose soldier past has made him accustomed to violence. Her most important relationship is with Saichi Sugimoto. Before meeting him, Asirpa had rarely smiled following the death of her father. Her uncle, Makanakkuru, notes that spending time with Sugimoto has given Asirpa back her smile, though she still secretly struggles with a fear of being abandoned, uncertain if Sugimoto will stay by her side once they find the gold. She also forms a key relationship with Yoshitake Shiraishi, the Escape King, whom she often teases but relies on as a member of their group.
Asirpa shows significant development over the course of the story. She evolves from a lonely girl who lost her father and was then left by her pet wolf Retar, to a capable leader with a clear goal of protecting her culture. While she always respected Ainu traditions, her journey reinforces her desire to forge a new path for her people. She also grows to trust her companions more deeply, learning to rely on them while maintaining her fierce independence. Asirpa possesses a wide range of notable abilities. She is a highly skilled hunter, trained from a young age by her father, which includes expertise in trapping, archery, brewing poisons, knowledge of traditional medicines, and survival in the harsh winter. She is also an excellent cook, capable of preparing many traditional Ainu dishes from foraged ingredients and hunted game. Furthermore, despite having little formal training, she is a good artist, which proves essential for sketching the prisoners' tattoos to document the treasure map.
