Description
Hiroshi Tateno is a main character and the most prominent male student in the fifth-grade class at Domori Elementary School. He is an energetic eleven-year-old boy with a sporty build, standing 145 centimeters tall and weighing 38 kilograms, with a birthday on July 29. His background includes the loss of his mother at a very young age, after which he was raised by his father, a hardworking long-distance truck driver in the seafood business. He transfers to Domori Elementary as a new student, where he quickly becomes a central figure in the class known as 5-3.

In terms of personality, Hiroshi is defined by his vibrant energy, fierce loyalty, and a powerful sense of justice that compels him to protect his classmates from any threat. He is courageous and heroic, often acting as the first to stand up against obstacles, whether they are human bullies or supernatural monsters. Despite his bravery, he is also known for his significant academic struggles, holding some of the worst grades in the class and once setting a record by scoring one hundred zeros in a row on his tests. He is considered air-headed, impulsive, and prone to acting before thinking, which sometimes gets him into trouble. However, in high-pressure, real-world predicaments, especially those involving his friends or soccer, his quick reflexes and sharp judgment often allow him to surprise others with his insight and leadership.

Hiroshi's primary motivation is his passion for soccer, which fuels his dream of becoming a professional player. This dream drives much of his actions both on and off the field. His role in the story is that of one of the most active supporters of his teacher, Meisuke Nueno, also known as Nube. Initially skeptical of Nube's claims about the supernatural, Hiroshi becomes a firm ally after being saved from a spiritual affliction that caused him violent, uncontrollable rage. This curse, which had given him a reputation as a troublemaker at his previous school, is a central part of his early character arc, and with Nube's guidance, he overcomes his despair and integrates into the class.

His key relationships include a close but combative friendship with his classmate Kyoko Inaba, with whom he shares a playful, bickering dynamic that eventually develops into a lasting romantic bond. In the sequel series, this relationship culminates in marriage, and the couple moves to Italy. He also shares a strong mentor-student bond with Nube, whom he sees as a savior, and a deep connection with his hardworking father.

Throughout the story, Hiroshi demonstrates significant development, evolving from a distrustful and troubled transfer student burdened by a supernatural curse into a courageous and dependable hero. In future storylines, his dream is realized as he becomes a world-famous professional soccer player, participating in international tournaments like the World Cup. His career faces a serious challenge when he suffers a severe leg injury, which he initially hides to avoid worrying Kyoko, but he eventually undergoes a risky operation and recovers. Later, he returns to Domori Elementary, where he uses a combination of his soccer skills and spiritual techniques, such as the Sutra of the White-Robed Goddess, to help Nube's new students and act as a mentor to younger characters.

Hiroshi's notable abilities lie almost entirely in his outstanding athletic talent. He is considered a prodigy in soccer, instantly becoming a regular member and the ace striker for the school team. His physical prowess is considerable, allowing him to face older bullies and even contribute to supernatural confrontations, often using his soccer skills in creative ways to exorcise spirits. While he lacks finesse in some sports like table tennis, he is quick to learn others, such as skateboarding. His character is a tribute to the main male lead from the classic manga Dokonjō Gaeru, which served as an influence for the series.
