Description
Dalton is a prominent figure from the Drum Island arc, known for his deep sense of duty and compassion. He originally served as the captain of the guard for the Drum Kingdom, a position he held during the reign of the previous king and initially under the tyrannical rule of the late king's son, Wapol. Standing at an imposing 218 centimeters tall with slicked-back black hair and a goatee, Dalton is a physically formidable presence. He typically wears a long, white fur-lined green tunic and carries an extra-large spade as his primary weapon.
Dalton is defined by his strong sense of honor, bravery, and genuine care for the citizens of his country. In return for his dedication, the people of Drum Island place immense trust in him. He is deeply compassionate, having been moved to tears by the noble sacrifice of the quack doctor, Hiriluk. This event was a turning point that pushed him to openly defy King Wapol. Despite his serious nature, Dalton has an eccentric habit of adding trivial and often unnecessary details when explaining something, a quirk that others have noticed. After the fall of Wapol, he was elected king of the newly renamed Sakura Kingdom, yet he continues to live a humble life, refusing to reside in the castle and instead choosing to live among the common people in the village of Bighorn.
Dalton’s primary motivation stems from his loyalty to the former king of Drum and his profound love for his homeland. He tolerated Wapol’s cruelty due to his debt to the previous monarch but was eventually driven to rebellion by Wapol's heartless actions, particularly the mocking of Hiriluk’s death. After Wapol fled the country during an attack by the Blackbeard Pirates, Dalton took charge, preventing the island from descending into chaos and earning the people's trust. His role in the story is central to the Drum Island Arc, where he initially meets the Straw Hat Pirates. Though suspicious of them as pirates, he is moved by their desperate pleas to find a doctor for a sick Nami and agrees to help them. When Wapol returns to reclaim his throne, Dalton confronts him, suffering severe injuries while protecting villagers. His ultimate goal becomes the liberation of his country, a wish fulfilled when Monkey D. Luffy defeats Wapol.
Dalton shares several key relationships. He has a strong sense of respect for Dr. Kureha, and while she treats him with a lack of formality, the two remain on friendly terms. He holds Tony Tony Chopper in the highest regard, having saved the reindeer's life years ago by stopping him from a suicidal attack on Wapol to avenge Hiriluk. He also has a deep respect for Nefertari Vivi, having been impressed by her maturity and grace as a child during a World Conference, which stood in stark contrast to his own king’s behavior. His primary antagonist is Wapol, for whom he harbors a deep hatred after years of tyranny. He also clashes with Wapol's former henchmen, Chess and Kuromarimo. His relationship with the Straw Hat Pirates evolves from hostility to profound gratitude, as Luffy’s actions freed his kingdom.
In terms of development, Dalton’s journey is one from a loyal but conflicted soldier to a rebellious prisoner and finally to a beloved and wise king. After witnessing the sacrifices of others and enduring tyranny, he sheds his subservience to take on the responsibility of leadership. Years later, he is seen attending the World Conference as the king of Sakura Kingdom, where he continues to watch over the Straw Hat crew's exploits and interacts with other world leaders.
Dalton possesses notable abilities as a powerful fighter. He ate the Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model Bison, a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a full bison or a human-bison hybrid. This form grants him immense physical strength, incredible speed, and high durability. He is resilient enough to survive multiple arrow wounds and being buried in an avalanche. His signature technique, used in his hybrid form, is called Fiddle Banff, where he charges at an opponent at tremendous speed while spinning his large spade to slice through anything in his path.
