Description
Natalie V. Adams, known professionally as Envy Adams, is a character from the Scott Pilgrim franchise, which includes the graphic novel series, the 2010 film adaptation, and the 2023 anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. She was born in February 1980. Envy is the lead singer and keyboardist for the popular band The Clash at Demonhead. She is Scott Pilgrim's ex-girlfriend, having dated him during their time at the University of Toronto. Their relationship ended when she broke up with him in a manner that left him deeply hurt, an event that Scott's friends describe as her having kicked his heart in the ass.

Envy's background is marked by a significant personal transformation. She was initially described as a quiet and mousey girl, but she deliberately changed her appearance and personality, adopting a more callous, aggressive, and ambitious demeanor. This shift allowed her to take control of the band she and Scott had played in together and pursue a successful music career. Her personality in the present is defined by a fierce independence, a dedication to her career as a rock star, and a willingness to assert herself in social and professional situations. She is unapologetic about her desires and is driven by ambition and a need to control her own narrative, having moved past her earlier insecurities.

Her motivations are centered on maintaining her success and public image as a pop star. She seeks validation through her career and her relationship with Todd Ingram, the bassist of her band, who is also one of Ramona Flowers's evil exes. In the story, she serves as a secondary antagonist whose presence forces Scott to confront unresolved feelings from his past. She acts as a catalyst for his emotional growth, as seeing her again after years reopens old wounds and challenges his sense of self. Her role in the anime series expands: she disrupts Scott's funeral by performing a set that turns mourners into an audience, and later becomes involved in the production of a biopic about Scott's life, taking on the role of Ramona Flowers.

Key relationships include her former partner Scott Pilgrim, whom she still regards with a mix of disdain and lingering history; her current boyfriend Todd Ingram, a superpowered vegan who shares her band; and Ramona Flowers, who becomes a rival and later a collaborator in the biopic storyline. She also maintains a tense dynamic with Kim Pine, Scott's drummer friend, who resents Envy for the way she treated Scott.

Throughout the series, Envy undergoes a subtle development. While initially presented as a one-dimensional ex who is purely antagonistic, later portrayals, particularly in the anime, add complexity to her character. She shows a capacity for self-reflection and a willingness to engage with Ramona not merely as a rival but as a peer, suggesting a degree of personal growth and a move away from her earlier callousness. Her notable abilities are primarily artistic and social: she is a talented vocalist, keyboardist, and performer, skilled at commanding an audience. She also possesses a sharp wit and a strong will, using her persona as a shield against vulnerability. In the more fantastical elements of the story, she does not have superhuman powers like some other characters, relying instead on her presence and influence.
