Description
Castalia, known in the original Japanese version as Marin of the Eagle, is a character from the anime and manga series Knights of the Zodiac. She is a Silver Knight, a warrior of significant rank who serves the goddess Athena and belongs to the constellation of Aquila the Eagle. As a female knight, she is bound by a strict code that requires her to hide her face behind a metal mask at all times; should a man see her uncovered face, she is compelled by tradition to either kill him or love him.

Born in Japan on March 18, Castalia’s early life was marked by hardship. She and her younger brother, Toma, were left to fend for themselves on the streets, forming a deep and protective bond. At some point, the siblings were separated, and despite her efforts, Castalia could not find him. This loss motivated her to travel to Greece, where she trained for six years to become a knight, eventually earning the Silver Cloth of the Eagle. Her personal quest to find her lost brother remains a quiet but persistent undercurrent in her life, and it is later revealed that Toma became Icarus, an Angel serving the goddess Artemis.

Within the Sanctuary, Castalia is best known for her role as the strict and demanding teacher of the protagonist, Pegasus. She is responsible for transforming him from a novice into a Bronze Knight, instilling in him the fundamental combat skills and the understanding of the cosmos, the inner energy that all knights wield. Her training methods are severe, but she develops a strong bond with her student, driven by a sense of responsibility and perhaps a reflection of the brother she lost. This relationship becomes a central aspect of her character, as she continually watches over and aids Pegasus long after his training is complete.

Castalia’s personality is characterized by her calm, collected, and highly intuitive nature. She is wise and possesses excellent judgment, often understanding the true nature of a situation faster than others. Because she never removes her mask, her facial expressions are a mystery, which adds to her enigmatic and distant demeanor. Beneath this reserved exterior, however, she is deeply loyal and caring, particularly towards Pegasus and the cause of Athena. This is demonstrated when she pretends to attack her own student to protect him from another Silver Knight, revealing her willingness to deceive her allies for a greater good. Her wisdom and skill as an instructor are highlighted by her rivalry with Tisifone of Ophiuchus, whose student, Cassios, was defeated by Pegasus. While Tisifone is powerful and aggressive, Castalia is portrayed as the more competent and insightful teacher.

Her role in the story is significant throughout several major sagas. During the battle against the other Silver Knights, she fights against Moses of the Whale and Asterion of the Hunting Dogs. When the Bronze Knights invade the Twelve Houses of the Zodiac to confront the Gold Knights, Castalia uses the chaos as cover to investigate the Pope of the Sanctuary. Her investigation leads her to the Star Hill, a sacred area reserved for the Pope, where she discovers the body of the true Pope, revealing that an impostor has been ruling from the shadows. Later, she sacrifices herself to help Pegasus pass through the deadly rose garden guarding the final house, using her own mask to filter the poisonous fumes before collapsing. In the subsequent Asgard arc, she travels to warn her comrades of a new threat but is defeated and imprisoned in a magical crystal before being freed. In the final Hades arc, she plays a crucial role in resolving a long-standing personal mystery for Pegasus: she is the one who finds and brings back his long-lost sister, Patricia, dispelling the earlier mistaken belief that Castalia herself was his sibling.

As a warrior, Castalia possesses the physical attributes of a Silver Knight, including superhuman speed, agility, and the ability to use her cosmos for devastating attacks. Her signature technique is the Eagle Toe Flash, a powerful, descending supersonic flying kick that strikes the enemy from above with the force of an eagle diving on its prey. She also uses the Ryuseiken, or Meteor Fist, a technique where she launches hundreds of high-speed punches that resemble shooting stars, a move she also taught to Pegasus. Her Silver Cloth, the Eagle Cloth, is notable for being composed of few pieces, offering less full-body coverage than many other armors but designed specifically for a female warrior. The character appears in several spin-off works, including the manga Saint Seiya: Next Dimension, where she continues to protect Pegasus and confronts threats from divine beings, and Saint Seiya: Saintia Sho, where she briefly trains a new generation of female knights.
