TV-Series
Description
Nakai stands out among his middle school classmates Nishikata and Takagi due to his tall stature. He has short brown hair and his eyes often appear closed because of his poor vision, requiring him to sit near the board. This vision impairment persists into adulthood, where he develops a more muscular build, sports stubble, and grows longer sideburns.

He possesses a calm, friendly, and laid-back personality, typically spending time with male friends like Nishikata. Nakai struggles initially when alone with his girlfriend, Mano, seeming dense and failing to take initiative, which frustrates her. Despite this, he cares deeply for her and shows thoughtful gestures. For instance, he refuses to write their names together in a romantic legend book at the 415 steps, not from disinterest, but because he had already secretly written her name there earlier, revealing a hidden romantic side beneath his seemingly aloof exterior.

His relationship with Mano begins in middle school. Key moments include a waterslide outing where they ride together following a rumor that couples who do so will fall in love, demonstrating their mutual affection despite awkwardness. They also attend a summer festival, watching fireworks together as their comfort grows. A kiss is hinted in Chapter 163 of the manga. As adults, they live together, shown in Chapter 129 of the spin-off *Karakai Jōzu no (Moto) Takagi-san*, and later marry, confirmed in Chapter 265.

Nakai's friendship with Nishikata is significant. He befriended Nishikata on their first day of middle school after being impressed by his lateness. Nakai supports Nishikata's relationship with Takagi, encouraging him to make moves, and joins group activities like diaries or trips to waterparks. Nishikata, in turn, aids Nakai and Mano's relationship, such as initiating an exchange diary involving Takagi and Mano.

Nakai's background includes an estimated age of 26–27 in the spin-off timeline, calculated from the over-10-year gap since middle school graduation (typically age 14–15 in Japan). His surname combines "middle" (中) and "well/mine shaft" (井).
