Description
Hideyoshi Nagachika, often called Hide, is a normal human and the best friend of Ken Kaneki. He is introduced as a freshman studying at the Department of International Studies of Kamii University, where he is majoring in English. Hide is a young man of average height, recognizable by his short, messy strawberry-blonde hair and brown eyes. He typically dresses in bright, casual clothes, most notably a yellow varsity jacket and green shorts, and is often seen with a pair of headphones around his neck due to his love of music. His appearance changes over time; after the Aogiri Tree arc, he lets his hair grow longer and begins wearing a red and white cap, often with a light-blue jacket over a white dress shirt.
On the surface, Hide has a consistently carefree, joyful, and friendly attitude, which can sometimes annoy others. However, this exterior masks a highly perceptive and intelligent individual. He is an incredibly observant person, capable of figuring out things about people with sharp, almost deductive reasoning. When he becomes interested in something, he pursues it with hard work and determination, sticking to his goals until the very end. Despite his loud and outspoken nature, he tends to keep his own worries and concerns to himself to avoid burdening those around him. He also shares a habit with his best friend Kaneki of placing his hand on his face when nervous or lying.
Hide’s primary motivation throughout the story is his unwavering loyalty to Ken Kaneki. From the time they were children, Hide has been a supportive and encouraging presence in Kaneki's life. After Kaneki is transformed into a one-eyed ghoul, Hide becomes deeply worried about his friend's sudden disappearances and changes in behavior. A significant part of his actions is driven by a desire to find and help Kaneki. To this end, he takes a part-time job at the Commission of Counter Ghoul, eventually becoming an investigation assistant for ghoul investigators Koutarou Amon and Akira Mado. His true reason for joining the CCG is to gather information and clues about Kaneki’s whereabouts.
Hide plays a crucial role as a bridge between Kaneki's human past and his ghoul present. Early in the story, he is present during an attack by the ghoul Nishiki Nishio, where Kaneki’s kagune first emerges to protect him. Later, it is revealed that Hide was the anonymous informant who tipped off the CCG about the location of the Aogiri Tree’s hideout, having placed a tracking device on the ghoul Yamori as part of his detective-like hobby. This information leads to a major raid. Hide's most significant act occurs during the Owl Suppression Operation at Anteiku. He finds a severely wounded Kaneki in the sewers and reveals that he has always known he is a ghoul. Understanding that Kaneki needs immense strength to escape, Hide offers himself to be eaten, asking Kaneki to fight with all his power one more time. In the manga continuity, this act results in Hide surviving with severe injuries, including a scar on his neck and damage to his mouth, requiring an artificial voice box. He later resurfaces under the alias of Scarecrow, a mysterious figure who works from the shadows to unite ghouls and investigators against common threats. In the anime adaptation, his fate differs, where he is presumed to have died from his wounds after bringing Kaneki to safety.
The most defining relationship in Hide's life is with Ken Kaneki. They have been best friends since childhood, when Hide approached the lonely, bookish Kaneki. Hide cares for Kaneki immensely and serves as his anchor to humanity. He is fiercely protective, and his dedication does not waver even after discovering Kaneki has become a ghoul. Other key relationships include his time at the CCG, where he works alongside investigators Akira Mado and Seidou Takizawa, sharing a friendly rapport with them. Itsuki Marude is the investigator who recognizes Hide’s potential and assigns him as an assistant. Hide also has a tense relationship with Nishiki Nishio, who finds Hide's perceptiveness threatening to his secret identity as a ghoul.
Hide undergoes significant development from a seemingly simple, fun-loving college student to a key strategist who operates in the dangerous world of ghouls and investigators. While he loses some of his initial cheerful naivety, his core determination and loyalty remain, evolving into a more self-sacrificing and covert form of heroism. As a normal human, Hide possesses no supernatural abilities like a kagune. His primary strengths are his keen intellect, sharp observational skills, and deductive reasoning, which allow him to analyze situations and people with remarkable accuracy. He also demonstrates considerable resourcefulness and courage, willing to infiltrate dangerous ghoul territory and sacrifice his own well-being for the sake of his friend.
