Description
Buchi is a fictional character from the manga and anime series One Piece, serving as a supporting antagonist during the Syrup Village Arc. He is an officer of the Black Cat Pirates and, along with his partner Sham, holds the position of protector of the crew's ship, the Bezan Black. Together, Buchi and Sham are known as the Nyaban Brothers, a duo whose name plays on the Japanese word for "meow" and their cat-like theme.

In terms of appearance, Buchi is a man of large stature and heavy weight, standing approximately 216 centimeters tall. His design is heavily inspired by a black and white cat. He has pale skin, sharp teeth, and small eyes, and often wears a cap with cat ears attached. His outfit includes striped black and white pants, a yellow sash, dark brown shoes, and a cape that is striped light and dark purple with a white, fluffy collar. He also wears a single shoulder pad on his left arm and pale blue gloves equipped with metal claws at the fingertips, which serve as his primary weapons.

The personality of Buchi is characterized as sneaky and devious, much like his partner Sham. He is a vicious fighter who takes pride in his strength. A notable aspect of his combat personality is his willingness to feign weakness, lack of confidence, and fear to lower an opponent's guard before striking with full force. This deceptive tactic is a core part of his battle strategy, allowing him to catch enemies off guard. He also acts in a manner that reflects his feline appearance and the cat-like theme of his crew.

Buchi's role in the story is primarily as an obstacle for the protagonist, Roronoa Zoro, during the assault on Syrup Village. He and Sham are summoned by the crew's captain, Jango, after the initial wave of Black Cat Pirates is defeated. At first, the Nyaban Brothers pretend to be cowards, but they quickly reveal their true capabilities. Sham distracts and restrains opponents, allowing Buchi to use his considerable weight and strength to crush them. Their teamwork is such that they are considered to be stronger than Jango when fighting together.

Buchi possesses notable superhuman abilities. Even without any enhancement, his physical strength is considerable, as he can crack stone ground with a powerful stomp. His signature technique is called Cat the Funjyatta, where he leaps high into the air and brings his full weight down on an opponent with a devastating stomp. He and Sham also have a combination attack named Neko-Yanagi Daikoshin, where they rapidly slash an opponent from both sides. After being defeated by Zoro, Buchi requests to be hypnotized by Jango. This hypnosis enhances his abilities dramatically, making him even more powerful and resilient. In this enhanced state, his physical strength increases to the point where he can shatter a large area of rock with a single jump. Despite this power boost, he is ultimately defeated once more by Zoro.

The background of Buchi reveals that he joined the Black Cat Pirates sometime in the past and rose through the ranks to become an officer. He and Sham typically stayed on the ship as its guardians. They were present three years before the Syrup Village incident when their captain at the time, Kuro, faked his death by killing a ship full of Marines. During the Syrup Village Arc, Buchi and Sham initially turn against Kuro when he insults their abilities, believing he has grown weak during his three years of inactivity. However, they are quickly and effortlessly subdued by their former captain, who threatens to kill them if they do not finish off Zoro and his allies within five minutes. This event highlights the immense power gap between the Nyaban Brothers and their former captain.

Key relationships define Buchi's place in the narrative. His most important relationship is with Sham, his partner in the Nyaban Brothers. They function as a perfect pair, with Sham's agility and restraining tactics complementing Buchi's raw strength and heavy attacks. They are almost always seen together and fight as a coordinated unit. Buchi also has a relationship with Jango, the ship's captain and hypnotist. After his initial defeat, he relies on Jango's hypnosis to gain a second wind in battle, trading his cunning for raw, mindless power. His primary adversarial relationship is with Roronoa Zoro, the swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates, who ultimately defeats him twice in their encounter.

Buchi shows some development over the course of his brief appearance. Initially, he is a calculating fighter who uses deception and teamwork to gain an advantage. After being defeated by Zoro, he willingly subjects himself to hypnosis, which transforms him into a far stronger but seemingly non-sentient and berserk fighter who mindlessly rushes at his target. This change represents a shift from a tactical fighter to a purely force-driven engine of destruction. While it grants him greater power, it also removes his strategic thinking, making him more predictable and ultimately still not a match for Zoro's skill.
