Description
Father Cornello is a minor antagonist and the self-proclaimed messenger of the god Leto, serving as the charismatic leader of the Church of Leto in the small desert town of Reole in eastern Amestris. He is a charlatan who has built a devoted following by performing what his信徒 believe to be genuine miracles. In truth, these wonders are simple acts of alchemy, powered by a Philosopher's Stone given to him by the homunculus Lust, allowing him to bypass the law of equivalent exchange that governs normal alchemy.

On the surface, Father Cornello presents himself as a kind and paternal figure, offering spiritual guidance and hope to the desperate people of Reole. He speaks with a gentle authority and promises salvation, which makes him an effective cult leader. However, this public persona hides a deeply corrupt and power-hungry individual. He holds his followers in contempt, viewing them as fools easily swayed by rhetoric and false promises. Beneath his benevolent mask, he is spineless, greedy, and ruthless, willing to kill anyone who threatens his plans without hesitation.

Cornello's primary motivation is the acquisition of temporal power. He admits that his goal is to amass a massive army of fanatical followers through his manufactured miracles, using their blind faith to overthrow the Amestrian government and install himself as the nation's ruler. His ambition is ultimately selfish; he is not a true believer but a con man who sees religion as the perfect tool for manipulation.

Cornello serves as the first significant obstacle encountered by the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse. The brothers arrive in Reole seeking information about the Philosopher's Stone, believing Cornello possesses one. A young, grieving follower named Rose is particularly loyal to Cornello, hoping he can use the Stone to resurrect her deceased boyfriend. When the Elrics expose his miracles as alchemical tricks, Cornello reveals his villainy, attempting to have them killed by a chimera and his own transmuted creatures. His plan unravels during a confrontation with Edward, who broadcasts Cornello's confession of world domination to the whole town and defeats him in battle. As the angry townspeople turn on him, Cornello flees to Lust for help, only for her to declare that he has outlived his usefulness. She kills him, and his body is devoured by Gluttony. He is then replaced by the homunculus Envy, who impersonates him to further the homunculi's own schemes by inciting a riot in Reole.

Cornello shows little to no personal development in the story, serving instead as a cautionary example of religious corruption and the danger of blind faith. He is a static character whose true nature is simply revealed, not changed. His defeat is complete and his death final, used to demonstrate the cold, calculating nature of the homunculi and their role as the series' true antagonists.

As an alchemist, Cornello is incompetent on his own, relying entirely on the counterfeit Philosopher's Stone for his power. With the Stone, he can transmute objects without a circle and on a large scale, such as creating a massive gun from a podium or transforming a small bird into a giant, monstrous version. When the fake Stone recoils during his fight with Edward Elric, the alchemical feedback horribly deforms his arm. In the 2009 anime adaptation, this rebound partially transforms him into a gigantic, monstrous version of himself, but he is still easily defeated. Without the Stone, he is powerless and cowardly, possessing no notable combat skills or innate alchemical talent of his own.
