Description
Hakuro, also known as Hakuro the Major General, is a state military officer in the nation of Amestris. He holds the rank of Major General and is stationed in the bustling city of New Optain within the Eastern Area of the country. One significant event from his personal background is an incident where he was traveling with his family on a train when it was hijacked by a terrorist group known as the Blue Squad. During this hostage crisis, he was shot in the left ear.
In terms of personality, Hakuro is consistently portrayed as a resentful and frustrated individual, particularly regarding the rapid rise of younger, more talented officers like Roy Mustang. He is known to be a man who prioritizes his own career advancement above all else. Described as a self-serving patriot, he engages in military politics with a pompous demeanor but lacks the deep conviction to pursue a dangerous matter if it might risk his position. He can be cold and is willing to use harsh methods against civilians, as seen in his actions during the Liore uprising.
Regarding his motivations and role, Hakuro is driven by a desire for status and a need to assert his authority. He has an open disapproval of Roy Mustang’s rise under the command of Lieutenant General Grumman, who is his superior. This professional jealousy leads him to try and bully or belittle the Flame Alchemist, though his attempts are consistently fruitless. His primary role in the military hierarchy is as a traditional, by-the-book officer who is frequently used as a pawn in larger political schemes by more cunning figures like Grumman. In a pivotal moment, he is manipulated into informing Führer King Bradley about Mustang’s attempted coup, unaware that this report is part of a trap designed to lure the Führer into an assassination attempt.
Looking at his development and key relationships, there are notable differences between the original manga and the 2009 anime adaptation compared to the 2003 anime. In the original source material, his role remains relatively minor, appearing mainly to serve as a bureaucratic obstacle and a tool for the schemes of others. However, in the 2003 anime series, his role is significantly expanded. Here, after the Elric brothers defeat the false prophet Cornello in Liore, Hakuro is assigned to pacify the city. His heavy-handed methods create severe political unrest, and he ignores the advice of the local woman Rose, leading to her being captured, tortured, and assaulted by his soldiers. Later in that adaptation, he attempts to seize the presidency for himself while King Bradley is temporarily absent, showcasing a more ambitious and villainous nature.
Regarding notable abilities, Hakuro possesses no particular alchemical skills or combat prowess that defines his character. His power comes solely from his high military rank and the authority that comes with it, allowing him to command large numbers of soldiers and lead military operations, such as the suppression of civil unrest in Liore or the pursuit of fugitive officers.
