TV-Series
Description
Ayame Sarutobi, known almost exclusively by the nickname Sacchan, is a former elite kunoichi of the Oniwabanshu, the shogun's personal ninja force. After the dissolution of this group, she continues to operate as a freelance assassin and cleaner, taking on contracts to eliminate targets that exist beyond the reach of the law. To supplement her income, she also works part-time as a waitress at a Kunoichi Cafe.
Physically, Sacchan is a tall and slender woman with long, light purple hair and a beauty mark beneath her right eye. Her most defining accessory is a pair of dark red glasses, which are a necessity due to her extremely poor eyesight; without them, she is virtually blind and prone to mistaking inanimate objects or other people for her intended target. Her standard attire consists of a modified martial arts uniform with cut-off sleeves, dark purple arm coverings, and black boots.
Sacchan possesses a complex and often contradictory personality. On one hand, she demonstrates a strong sense of justice and a high degree of professionalism when on a mission, displaying a cold and efficient "killer mode". On the other hand, she is a loud, openly perverted, and unapologetic masochist, particularly regarding her obsessive infatuation with Sakata Gintoki. She revels in being treated roughly by him, interpreting his verbal abuse and physical violence as forms of affection. This obsession manifests as persistent stalking; she frequently hides in the rafters of the Yorozuya office or follows Gintoki through the streets, usually announcing her presence with a screeching cry of "Gin-san!". Despite her perverse fixation, she takes great pride in her work and refuses to compromise her professional principles, even for Gintoki.
Her primary motivation is her love for Gintoki, which drives her to remain close to him and constantly seek his attention, no matter how negative the response. Her actions are also guided by a personal philosophy that some injustices can only be stopped by committing other injustices, a belief that fuels her work as an assassin.
Her most significant relationship is with Gintoki, who serves as both the object of her desire and the target of her masochism. While she sees Shimura Tae and Tsukuyo as romantic rivals and frequently bickers with them, she also shares a deep, unspoken bond of friendship with them, particularly in serious situations. She has a long history with fellow ninja Hattori Zenzou, having trained under his father since childhood. Their relationship is one of deep understanding and mutual respect, despite her tendency to mercilessly tease him about his hemorrhoids. She is also loyal to the shogun Tokugawa Shigeshige, having vowed to protect him from a young age.
Throughout the series, Sacchan demonstrates notable development, showing that her loyalty to her friends and her professionalism can outweigh her comedic obsessions. In the Glasses Arc, she shows immense emotional attachment to a pair of glasses given to her by Gintoki, prioritizing them over her own safety. More dramatically, during the Assassination of the General Arc, she sets aside her antics to fight alongside her former comrades, showcasing her genuine bravery and dedication to protecting the shogun, even when gravely injured.
As a kunoichi, Sacchan is an extraordinarily skilled combatant. Her training from childhood has granted her superhuman agility, stealth mastery, and expert proficiency with thrown weapons like kunai, which she can use with perfect accuracy even without her glasses. Her fighting style is unorthodox; her favorite food is natto (fermented soybeans), which she weaponizes for its sticky, immobilizing properties, using it in techniques like natto-sticky smoke bombs. After the inventor Gengai repaired her cherished glasses, they were upgraded with features such as laser beams and the ability to transform into an armored angel-like form for a special technique called "The Flight of Hundred Glasses". She effectively operates in two distinct modes: the professional and lethal "killer mode" for work, and the distracted, lovestruck "pig mode" whenever Gintoki is near.
