Description
Kanoko Amamiya, whose real name is Kanoko Mamiya, is a central character in the story. She is a high school girl who becomes a waitress at the Liebe Girls Academy café, where she uses the pseudonym Kanoko Amamiya. Physically, she is recognizable by her dusty-blue hair, which she typically ties up in a bun while leaving long strands to frame her face, and her mint-green eyes. She stands at 156 centimeters tall.

Describing Kanoko’s personality in simple terms is difficult, as she is deeply complex and driven by powerful, conflicting emotions. On the surface, she appears to be extremely shy, soft-spoken, and reserved. She has significant difficulty communicating with others, to the point where social situations outside of her very narrow comfort zone cause her visible distress. However, beneath this quiet exterior lies a surprising bluntness and a deeply obsessive nature. Her entire world revolves around her best friend and object of her affection, Hime Shiraki. Kanoko is not just a devoted friend; she is consumed by a one-sided romantic love for Hime, exhibiting what she herself recognizes as stalker-like behavior, including taking hundreds of candid photographs of Hime and keeping them in a secret folder on her phone.

Understanding Kanoko’s motivations requires looking back at her past. In middle school, Kanoko was an isolated and cynical loner who saw her classmates as “good kids,” a term she used as an insult to dismiss their kindness as fake. She was likely bullied by a gyaru, a type of fashionable, outgoing girl, which left her feeling distressed around such personalities. She found solace in a secret spot near the locked rooftop door. It was there that the popular and seemingly perfect Hime Shiraki found her. Unlike others, Hime persisted in befriending her, and a pivotal moment occurred when Hime protected Kanoko after she destroyed a class project in a fit of frustration. After this incident, Hime revealed her own cynical true nature to Kanoko, showing that her perfect persona was just an act. This created an intense bond between them; for the first time, Kanoko had someone who was genuinely honest with her, and she fell deeply in love. Her core motivation is to preserve this unique connection and to protect the “true” Hime that only she believes she knows. She does not want Hime to return her romantic feelings, as she fears that would change the fundamental nature of their relationship and possibly lead to her being abandoned.

Within the story, Kanoko plays the role of an observer and a catalyst for drama. She follows Hime to the Liebe café after discovering her secret job, intending only to watch over her. However, a misunderstanding leads to her being hired as a waitress. Her role becomes one of instability; her intense jealousy and possessiveness are triggered by Hime’s rekindled friendship and performative romance with another waitress, Mitsuki Yano. This jealousy makes Kanoko a ticking time bomb, forcing other characters, particularly Sumika Tachibana, to intervene and attempt to defuse a situation that threatens the harmony of the café.

Key relationships define her development. Her relationship with Hime Shiraki is the axis on which her world spins. She is fiercely protective and possessive of Hime, seeing herself as Hime’s one true friend and confidant. The entrance of Mitsuki Yano, who shares a history and a unique bond with Hime, becomes a major source of anguish for Kanoko, as she feels her position as Hime’s “special someone” is being threatened. The most transformative relationship in her life, however, is with Sumika Tachibana. Sumika is a gyaru, the very archetype of person who made Kanoko uncomfortable. Their relationship begins in conflict when Sumika discovers Kanoko’s secret photo collection. Instead of blackmailing her, Sumika uses this knowledge to force Kanoko to confront her own repressed feelings and possessiveness. Initially antagonistic, this dynamic slowly evolves. Sumika becomes the one person who truly understands the depth and pain of Kanoko’s unrequited love. She encourages Kanoko to be more honest and, over time, they develop a deep bond that eventually becomes romantic, spurred on by the manipulative former employee Youko Gotou. This relationship is crucial for Kanoko’s growth, as it represents her first meaningful connection with someone other than Hime.

Kanoko undergoes significant character development, moving from a state of complete self-denial to a gradual, painful self-awareness. At the start, she is so deep in the closet that she has convinced herself her obsessive feelings for Hime are perfectly normal and platonic. Through her forced interactions with Sumika, she is compelled to label her feelings for the first time, admitting aloud that she loves Hime. Her development involves learning to accept that her love for Hime will never be returned and that her idealized, static relationship with her best friend cannot last. Her decision to enter a relationship with Sumika, even one born partly from confusion and manipulation, marks a significant step away from her obsession and toward a healthier, more honest form of emotional connection.

In terms of notable abilities, Kanoko possesses a sharp and perceptive mind, allowing her to see through the social facades of others almost instantly. She was the first to truly see Hime’s cynical real self, just as she was able to see through Hime’s fake persona to the genuine person underneath, which paradoxically deepened her love. Her other notable ability is less a skill and more a consequence of her obsession: she is exceptionally good at remaining in the background and observing Hime, an ability born from years of unrequited longing and silent devotion. Her primary limitation, however, is her profound social anxiety and inability to communicate openly, which is the central flaw she must struggle to overcome throughout the narrative.
