Description
Edil is a young man from the human empire who plays a significant role in the tragic backstory of the titular character, serving as a close friend and former comrade-in-arms. He is the son of a feudal lord who presided over a town near the national border and is the youngest of three brothers, taking after his mother in appearance. Edil has brown hair styled with bangs covering his left eye, a haircut that has been passed down through his family for generations. In his youth, he was often mistaken for a girl.
Before the events of the main story, Edil experienced profound loss. His parents passed away when he was very young, and the two older brothers he loved were killed in action when he was just fourteen years old. These tragedies shaped his character, instilling in him a deep desire to protect people and put his comrades first, maintaining a cheerful disposition even in the face of hardship. This sense of duty led him to join a monster subjugation unit, where he met and befriended Helck. The unit was sent to liberate Edil's own village from monsters, and it was during this mission that the two became close. Edil often sees reflections of his deceased brothers in Helck, particularly due to the hero's burly physique and gentle smile.
Edil’s worldview is heavily influenced by the propaganda of the Human Empire, which fosters an initial and deep-seated distrust of Demons, blaming them for humanity’s suffering. This prejudice is a key aspect of his character, setting him apart from the more open-minded Helck. Within the narrative, Edil is primarily known for his transformation into an Awakened human, also referred to as a Warrior of the New World. After going berserk and undergoing this dark metamorphosis, his appearance changes drastically; his hair turns white and his eyes turn yellow.
In this awakened state, Edil wields formidable abilities. He possesses immense speed and superb reflexes, to the point where he can outpace the powerful demon Azudora. He gains enhanced durability, characteristic of all awakened humans, and sprouts wings that grant him the ability to fly. A skilled swordsman, he wields a knightly sword in battle. One of his most notable and terrifying abilities as a hero is resurrection; when killed in combat, he is automatically resurrected and re-summoned to serve the Human King, making him a persistent and relentless foe.
Despite his transformation into an enemy of the demons, Edil’s original personality struggles to resurface. A key relationship in this state is his violent rivalry with the demon warrior Hyura, who kills him repeatedly in battle. This cycle of death and resurrection ironically becomes the catalyst for his human side to momentarily break free from the mental control of the awakening spell. His loyalty to Helck remains a core part of his character, anchoring his past to his present, even as he is forced to become a tool of the very empire that caused him so much pain.
