Description
Hakune is a character introduced in the Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest manga and anime series, serving as a prominent antagonist during the Elentir arc. She is a member of the Moonlight Divinities, an elite all-female group of subordinates who serve directly under the powerful Dragon God known as Selene, the Moon Dragon God. Her role in the story is that of a bodyguard and enforcer, tasked with carrying out Selene's will and confronting the members of Team Natsu when they travel to the parallel world of Elentir.
In terms of appearance, Hakune is depicted with long, light-colored hair and blue eyes. Her standard attire consists of an old Japanese-style western yukata, which features intricate designs that complement her serene image. At some point in her battle with Gray Fullbuster, she reveals a battle form; in this state, her clothing disappears, and her body becomes partially covered in ice while other areas remain exposed, an appearance that also projects an intimidating aura.
Hakune's personality is defined by a stark duality. She generally presents a calm and serene persona, maintaining a composed and almost ethereal demeanor. However, this placid exterior hides a more dangerous side, as she becomes deadly once provoked, showing a particular animosity towards men. This two-faced nature, shifting from tranquility to lethal aggression, is a core aspect of her character.
She wields a unique power system known as Spirit Arts. Her specific ability is called Freezing, which grants her the power to manipulate the very concept of freezing on a metaphysical level. This ability is exceptionally formidable because it does not simply encase a target in ice; it can also freeze Magic Power, Curse Power, and other Spirit Arts. This effectively neutralizes the abilities of her opponents, preventing them from harnessing their powers, resistances, or elemental attributes. Among her techniques are Snow Wave, where she releases a powerful wave of snow at her target, and Diamond Titan, which allows her to shape swirling snow into a giant, one-eyed, horned creature of ice to attack for her. If this ice titan is destroyed, Hakune suffers severe injuries as a form of backlash. Another notable ability is Snow-Woman, which lets her summon yokai that create dolls made of snow; these dolls take the forms of women and are meant to be irresistible to men, serving as a form of distraction.
Hakune's most significant role in the story comes during her confrontation with Gray Fullbuster. Initially, she attempts to overpower him using her freezing abilities, creating a stalemate as both are ice users capable of countering each other's attacks. Recognizing this deadlock, she changes tactics by exploiting what she perceives to be his emotional weakness. She uses a powerful technique called Mugen Setsugekka, which surrounds the target in a whirlwind of snow and ice, freezing them and trapping their mind in an elaborate, dream-like fantasy world. For Gray, this illusion manifests as a perfect reality where he is married to Juvia Lockser, has a son named Greige, and is joined by his deceased loved ones, including his father Silver, his mentor Ur, and her daughter Ultear, all celebrating his birthday. Hakune is confident that this illusory happiness will hold him indefinitely. However, Gray breaks free from the spell by recognizing its falsehood, declaring that his true desire is not to be happy himself, but to make the real Juvia happy. This resolve shatters the Mugen Setsugekka, surprising Hakune as her ability is overcome by the strength of his genuine emotions. The battle concludes when she summons her Diamond Titan, and Gray counters by creating an army of giant ice knights with his Ice-Make: Heavy Knights, which overwhelm and destroy the titan, defeating Hakune and rendering her unconscious. Through this encounter, Hakune serves as a direct foil to Gray, representing a cold, frozen heart numb to emotion, contrasted with his powerful, warm devotion to another person.
