Description
Helga Velvet is a character from the anime and manga series The Witch and the Beast. She is a young witch who belongs to the lineage of the Stouthearted Witch, a bloodline with a specific magical heritage. Her appearance is marked by a sword-like magical crest beneath her right eye, a physical trait of her family line. She has black hair with reddish highlights and purple eyes.

As a member of the Stouthearted Witch family, Helga was born into a sacred duty. Her ancestors were the designated protectors of a legendary and dangerous demon sword known as Ashgan, which was sealed away by a figure named Quenna. For generations, Helga's family lived in seclusion, safeguarding this powerful and world-threatening blade. However, this hidden existence came to a violent end when a group known as the Executioners attacked her family's village and slaughtered nearly everyone. Helga Velvet is the sole survivor of this massacre.

Following the incident involving the demon sword, Helga accepted an invitation from a mage named Ashaf to join the Magical Resonance Order, the organization he works for. The Order took over the responsibility of maintaining the seal on the demon sword Ashgan, which freed Helga from the immense drain on her magical power. Before this, her constant focus on the seal had caused her to be considered one of the weakest among witches. With the Order managing the seal, she is able to access and utilize her inherent power as a Stouthearted Witch to a much greater degree.

In terms of personality, Helga is straightforward and has an honest and direct way of expressing herself. She possesses a remarkably strong will and a deep sense of responsibility, demonstrated by her determination to protect the demon sword despite facing life-threatening danger on multiple occasions. This unwavering commitment to her family's mission is a central part of her character.

Despite her resilience in the face of duty, Helga has a personality that contrasts with the grim world she inhabits. She has an almost ordinary and even innocent desire to find a boyfriend, a dream that is presented as a normal aspiration she holds alongside her extraordinary circumstances. Her personality is also described as being somewhat childish and endearing, which adds a lighter dynamic to the story. This quality makes her stand out from the more ruthless and stereotypically malevolent witches often pursued by the authorities in the series.

Helga's role in the story begins when she becomes a target for both the Paladin Corps, a powerful military order that hunts witches, and the main characters, Ashaf and Guideau. She is wrongly accused of committing a series of murders in the city of Pontevert. In reality, the Paladin Corps is attempting to frame her to get possession of the demon sword she guards. Guideau, who harbors a deep and violent hatred for all witches, finds her resolve tested when a contract forces her to work alongside and protect Helga.

A key relationship in Helga's life is her bond with the demon sword Ashgan. This sword is sentient and talkative, possessing a blunt and often exasperating personality that contrasts with Helga's more earnest nature. Their interactions provide moments of humor, with the sword acting as a comedic foil to her. She also forms a significant, if initially uneasy, connection with Guideau. As they fight side-by-side against the Paladin Corps and the Executioners, Guideau's rigid hatred begins to soften slightly, and Helga becomes a sympathetic figure who challenges the protagonist's black-and-white view of witches.

While initially portrayed as being weak in battle due to the strain of the demon sword's seal, Helga possesses notable magical abilities. Her family's unique magic is called Magia Spada, or Sword Magic, which allows her to summon and control swords in combat. When she is able to access her full power, her latent strength is revealed to be immense, with the potential to be world-ending. However, her most remarkable ability is not offensive power but her extraordinary willpower, which allows her to resist the demon sword's influence. Ashgan drives ordinary people mad with desire for its power, causing them to fight and kill each other to possess it, but Helga is one of the few who can carry it without succumbing to its temptation.
