TV-Series
Description
Kabru is a young adventurer who serves as the leader of his own party on the Island. He is a tall-man with dark skin, black curly hair, and distinctive blue eyes. At the beginning of the story, he is twenty-two years old. His typical dungeon attire consists of a chain mail shirt beneath pieces of plate and leather armor, worn with white pants and boots. On the surface, he usually dresses more casually in a white shirt and black pants.
Kabru’s personality is complex and marked by a sharp contrast between his public demeanor and his inner self. Outwardly, he is friendly, charming, and often humble, a persona he uses to disarm people and skillfully navigate social situations. He possesses a deep curiosity about others, keeping detailed mental tabs on the actions and motivations of fellow adventurers and influential figures on the Island. However, beneath this affable surface lies a deeply cynical and driven individual. He possesses a strong sense of justice but is unforgiving towards those he believes are corrupt, such as corpse-retrievers who exploit adventurers for profit and the Island's own governor. He distrusts people with political power, believing they rarely use it responsibly.
Kabru’s primary motivation is rooted in a traumatic childhood event. Fifteen years before the main story, he witnessed the destruction of his hometown, Utaya, and the death of his family when monsters flooded out of the local dungeon. He was rescued from this disaster by a group of elves known as the Canaries and was subsequently adopted and raised by their vice-commander, Milsiril. This tragedy instilled in him a powerful resolve to prevent such a catastrophe from ever happening again. His ultimate goal is to find a way to close the dungeon for good, ensuring that no one else has to suffer the same loss.
Within the story’s broader narrative, Kabru initially appears as a foil to the main protagonist, Laios. While Kabru is politically astute, socially adept, and skilled at reading people, his party frequently struggles and gets killed because they lack experience with the specific monsters and ecology of the dungeon. In contrast, Laios possesses immense practical knowledge of monsters but is socially oblivious. Kabru spends much of the story observing Laios from a distance, initially suspicious of him based on rumors. However, after meeting him, Kabru concludes that Laios is simply eccentric and recognizes that his unique monster expertise makes him the person most likely to successfully defeat the dungeon lord. He thus decides to support Laios in his quest.
Kabru’s key relationships are numerous and significant. He shares a close bond with his adoptive mother, Milsiril, though he finds her extremely doting and overbearing. Despite this discomfort, he feels deeply indebted to her for raising him. His relationship with Laios is central, evolving from wary suspicion to a crucial alliance. He eventually admits to Laios that, despite hating monsters, he wants to be his friend in order to understand his perspective. Another important connection is with Mithrun, the captain of the Canaries. Kabru ends up acting as a caretaker for the elf lord, ensuring he eats and sleeps, and in the process learns dark secrets about the true nature of dungeons and demons. Within his own adventuring party, he is generally playful and supportive. His party includes the mage Rin, who is in love with him; the cleric Holm; the kobold Kuro, with whom he can speak in the kobold language; and the half-foot Mickbell.
Throughout the series, Kabru undergoes notable development. He sheds most of his heavy armor after being killed a second time, adopting a simpler, black turtleneck for greater mobility. More importantly, his worldview is challenged and expanded. His intense hatred for monsters, stemming from the destruction of Utaya, remains a core part of him, yet he is forced to confront it. He is eventually persuaded to eat monster cuisine and does so despite finding the idea disgusting. His journey forces him to reconcile his cynical, manipulative nature with a genuine desire to protect others and help a person (Laios) he initially distrusted, revealing a capacity for selflessness and friendship that surprises even him.
Kabru possesses a diverse and formidable set of abilities, though with notable blind spots. He is a highly skilled combatant, especially against humanoid opponents. His training under Milsiril made him proficient with various melee weapons, including swords, daggers, and spears. He has a precise knowledge of human vital organs, allowing him to dispatch human enemies with lethal efficiency. His greatest strengths lie in his psychological acumen. He has excellent observation skills, a perfect memory for details about people, and is a master of diplomacy and manipulation, capable of charming or bargaining with almost anyone. He is also multilingual, able to speak the language of kobolds. However, his primary weakness is his lack of practical knowledge about monsters, their behaviors, and the unique environment of the dungeon, a gap in his expertise that repeatedly proves fatal for him and his party.
