Description
Kaori, almost exclusively nicknamed Kaorin, is a student initially sharing a high school class with the main cast during their first two years. Her background centers on academic life and social interactions within this setting. She maintains a close friendship with classmate Chihiro, often seen alongside her, and actively participates in the Astronomy Club, attending their summer camps.

Her defining characteristic is an intense, unrequited romantic infatuation with fellow student Sakaki. This manifests as extreme shyness and anxiety around Sakaki, often rendering her unable to speak clearly or act normally. She harbors deep jealousy regarding Sakaki's interactions with others, particularly Tomo, evidenced by distress upon seeing a photo of Tomo sleeping near Sakaki after a summer trip she missed. Her feelings remain largely unnoticed by the group, except for Osaka, who directly questioned if Kaorin was "gay," prompting Kaorin to correct the terminology to "lesbian" while denying the label applied to her. Sakaki shows no indication of reciprocation, viewing Kaorin only as a friend.

Despite a typically reserved and sensitive personality, Kaorin displays sudden bursts of fierce temper and neuroticism, primarily concerning Sakaki or when feeling threatened in their interactions. She demonstrates artistic ability, collaborating with Chihiro on designing costumes like Chiyo's penguin suit for a cultural festival.

In her senior year, she is transferred into the class taught by Mr. Kimura, who develops an obsessive and unwelcome fixation on her. He insists on using her nickname "Kaorin," plants a garden named after them ("Kimurin and Kaorin"), and publicly declares they will "be together forever," causing her consistent dread and discomfort. While she briefly attempts to view Kimura more sympathetically after meeting his kind wife, this perspective quickly fades due to his continued behavior.

Her role expanded significantly in the anime adaptation compared to the original manga. While appearing sparsely in later manga chapters, she features prominently throughout most anime episodes, appearing in the opening and closing credits alongside the main cast. The anime incorporates her into group activities omitted from the manga, such as preparing for the first culture festival, visiting Chiyo's house, celebrating New Year's Day at a shrine, and joining the trip to Chiyo's summer house (where she suffered lasting distress from Yukari's driving). It also adds original scenes focusing on her feelings for Sakaki and encounters with Kimura. Her academic performance is depicted as strong in the anime, achieving high test scores, whereas the manga offers little detail. One anime-exclusive moment shows her assertiveness demanding Tomo retake a blurred photo with Sakaki.

She makes a cameo in "Azumanga Web Daioh" with a slightly different hair design. She appears in "The Very Short Movie." Her final manga appearance occurs in chapter 41, and she is absent from only four anime episodes (18, 19, 24, 25). Supplementary manga chapters released for the 10th anniversary do not provide additional information about her.
