Description
Kaori, almost universally addressed by the affectionate nickname Kaorin, is a classmate of the main characters during their first two years of high school. She is typically seen alongside her best friend, Chihiro, and the two are often a quiet pair on the periphery of the central group's activities. While her given name is Kaori, the cuter nickname reflects her generally shy and sensitive demeanor. She has dark, chin-length hair styled in a bob with straight bangs and large, expressive brown eyes, presenting a classic and unassuming appearance.

Personality-wise, Kaorin's defining trait is her intense, unrequited crush on her classmate Sakaki. This infatuation is the primary driver of her character, transforming her from a reserved and timid girl into someone prone to extreme jealousy and neurotic panic. When Sakaki is involved, Kaorin can display a ferocious temper, such as when she becomes fiercely competitive for Sakaki's attention during a three-legged race or reacts with horror upon seeing a photograph of Tomo sleeping next to her beloved. The humor of her obsession comes from the exaggerated, romanticized lens through which she views Sakaki, imagining being surrounded by flowers and wedding bells whenever they are paired together. Ironically, Kaorin idolizes Sakaki for her cool, aloof, and powerful exterior – precisely the traits that the shy, animal-loving Sakaki wishes she did not have. This means Kaorin is in love with an image of Sakaki that does not fully align with reality.

When not focused on Sakaki, Kaorin often serves as a sensible "straight man" and a comedic foil to the more eccentric members of the cast. She is academically proficient, and in the anime adaptation, she is shown getting high scores on a test that her athletic classmate Kagura found difficult. She also demonstrates artistic talent, helping to design the infamous penguin costume that the young prodigy Chiyo wears for the culture festival. For her first two years of high school, Kaorin is a member of the Astronomy Club, though her primary motivation for attending its camps and activities seems less about a passion for stars and more about a desire for inclusion and, perhaps, a chance to be near Sakaki.

Kaorin's role in the story is significantly larger in the anime adaptation than in the original manga. In the anime, she is more closely integrated with the main group, accompanying them on trips to Chiyo's summer house, preparing for the culture festival, and even appearing in the opening and closing credits. Her narrative is largely defined by two key relationships. The first is her unspoken longing for Sakaki, which she never musters the courage to confess. The second is her discomfort with the predatory teacher Kimura-sensei, who develops an obsessive and inappropriate interest in her. In their final year, Kimura has Kaorin transferred into his class, much to her dismay, and his behavior towards her is a persistent source of anxiety and a running gag that contrasts with her other, more wholesome crush.

While her feelings for Sakaki remain largely unchanged throughout the series, Kaorin does experience minor developments, primarily the expansion of her social circle and her increased participation in school events. She is a sensitive and occasionally neurotic character whose emotional highs and lows are played for both sympathetic and comedic effect, providing a relatable depiction of an all-consuming adolescent crush from a distance. She is also one of the few characters whose parent is shown on-screen, as her mother appears briefly to wake her from a dream about Sakaki. On graduation day, Kaorin's final request is for a picture with Sakaki, encapsulating a high school experience that began and ended with her heart set on the same person.
