Description
Brad Coleman is a character from the anime and manga series Mashle: Magic and Muscles. He is a middle-aged man, forty years old, who serves as an officer in the magical police force. His appearance is distinct and rough around the edges, characterized by slicked-back hair, stubble on his face, and a single, noticeable scar running down from the inner corner of his left eye. He is often seen smoking, which adds to his intimidating, hard-boiled demeanor, and he typically wears the dark blue suit that serves as the standard uniform for the Magic Police.

At the start of the story, Brad Coleman is portrayed as a strict, no-nonsense law enforcer who is largely motivated by personal gain and career advancement. He is shown to be somewhat corrupt and opportunistic, viewing his job as a means to earn money and prestige rather than a duty to uphold justice. He treats petty criminals harshly not out of a sense of moral obligation but out of annoyance at the prospect of having to deal with them again. His initial interest in the protagonist, Mash Burnedead, is purely self-serving. Upon discovering that Mash is a person without any magic marks living in a society where magic is everything, Brad sees him not as a threat or a person in need, but as a ticket to a promotion and a substantial reward.

Brad's role in the narrative begins as that of an antagonist. He tracks Mash and his adoptive father, Regro Burnedead, to their secluded home and brutally tortures Regro to force Mash out of hiding. This confrontation leads to a pivotal fight with Mash, during which Brad deploys his most powerful offensive magic spells. His signature abilities include "Nalcompas" and its stronger variant, "Nalcompas Diagorus," which are powerful magic bullets that can cause large explosions. He is also capable of creating tracking magic in the form of a bird made of energy, conjuring defensive barriers, and using magical restraints to subdue or torture others. Despite his formidable skills for an average single-liner mage—notably, he once drove off a dragon, a feat that earned him significant respect—his magic proves completely ineffective against Mash's superhuman physical strength. Mash casually deflects Brad's most powerful attacks, ultimately defeating him by throwing a wand with enough force to cut his cheek.

Following this humiliating defeat, Brad undergoes a significant transformation. He abandons his plan of capture and instead proposes a deal to Mash and Regro. He offers to provide Mash with a fake magic mark and help him enroll in Easton Magic Academy on the condition that Mash strives to become a Divine Visionary, the most elite and revered student. In exchange for this title's reward money and prestige, Brad promises to keep Mash's secret and ensure that his family is never hunted by the authorities. Without hesitation, Mash accepts the deal, setting the entire plot of the series in motion.

Brad's motivations thus shift from selfish ambition to a more complex, self-preserving pragmatism that gradually reveals a hidden sense of loyalty and kindness. He is risking a great deal by helping a magicless individual, as the society of this world is extremely discriminatory. His actions, though initially self-serving, are surprisingly generous and put him in significant personal danger. This reveals a softer, more caring side that he rarely shows to others.

His key relationships evolve dramatically throughout the story. The most notable of these is with Regro Burnedead. What begins as an antagonistic relationship of captor and victim transforms into an unusual and deep friendship. The two are frequently seen together, sharing everyday moments like sitting around a campfire or having tea, and they become a comedic duo of sorts in bonus chapters and anime-original scenes, often getting caught up in silly situations or magical mishaps. Brad also becomes an unexpected but staunch supporter of Mash, watching over him with genuine concern from a distance during the entrance exams and throughout his journey at the academy. He truly comes to care for his new friends, putting his career and safety on the line to protect them as the story progresses into later arcs, such as the fight against the organization Innocent Zero, where he assists in the final battle. Brad Coleman, therefore, develops from a corrupt and opportunistic minor villain into a reliable, if rough-around-the-edges, ally whose surprising goodness and loyalty make him a memorable part of the story.
