Description
Hirai is a secondary character in the anime Murai in Love, and serves as one of the main protagonist Chisato Murai's closest friends. He is a second-year student at Takebe Gakuen High School, attending the general course. Hirai is widely recognized for his good looks and carries a reputation as a playboy, having flirted with numerous female students, a habit that has also earned him some enemies among them.

A loyal and supportive friend, Hirai often acts as part of a trio alongside Murai and another classmate, Akifumi Kiriyama. While Murai is intensely and single-mindedly focused on winning the affection of his teacher, Ayano Tanaka, Hirai and Kiriyama frequently find themselves drawn into his unconventional romantic pursuits. Their involvement is not just passive; they actively participate in Murai's schemes. For example, when Murai decides to immerse himself in the world of otome games to better understand Tanaka's beloved character Hitotose, Hirai and Kiriyama join him in struggling through the game Sengoku Koi Emaki. This shared experience highlights their willingness to support Murai in his unusual mission.

Hirai's role is primarily that of a confidant and a source of comic relief. He and Kiriyama often find themselves observing Murai and Tanaka's chaotic interactions with a mix of amazement and bemusement. In several situations, they act as intermediaries or unwitting participants in the drama. Hirai is present when the group listens to a drunk and upset Tanaka after a misunderstanding at a doujinshi convention, demonstrating his proximity to the main events of the story. He also shows a more proactive side when he and Kiriyama express concern over Murai's well-being, revealing to Tanaka that Murai has been secretly training on her behalf, leading her to rush to find him.

Much like his friend Kiriyama, Hirai can be seen as one of the eccentric peers who understands and accepts Murai's strange behavior. While he may be more socially savvy and experienced in flirtation than the straightforward Murai, his genuine affection for his friend is the driving force behind his actions. Hirai does not possess any special abilities or supernatural traits; rather, his value lies in his grounded yet playful personality, which contrasts with and complements Murai's extreme earnestness, making him an integral part of the story's central friend group.
