TV-Series
Description
Abel is a friend of Lawrence from their days together at the seminary. He originally worked as a pastor at a church in a western town but left that position, officially citing exhaustion from dealing with people. In truth, his relocation to Lawrence's church was motivated by a desire to check on Lawrence's well-being and to escape his duties as a tutor for Hazelita Aldridge. Upon arriving, he takes up residence in the church, living under Lawrence's care due to a complete lack of practical life skills, a trait he shares with Cecilia.
Abel's personality is characterized by a carefree, unserious, and teasing nature. He often slacks off in his pastoral duties and enjoys provoking Lawrence, which frequently lands him in trouble and results in Lawrence treating him with a distinct lack of reverence. Despite this, his demeanor hides a sharp and observant mind. He knows Lawrence better than almost anyone else, a fact that often makes Cecilia jealous as she does not share their shared history. Abel watches over the evolving relationship between Lawrence and Cecilia, finding amusement in their dynamic and teasing them about it, while generally preferring to let them resolve their own affairs rather than interfering directly.
His past is marked by hardship. As a child, Abel was placed in an orphanage because his ability to see angels and other supernatural beings was not accepted by those around him. This ability, a rare gift, set him apart and led to a lonely childhood. When he first entered the seminary, he had a dark, introverted, and solitary personality, deliberately avoiding interactions with others. It was Lawrence's persistent and patient efforts to befriend him that slowly broke through his walls, transforming him over time into the more mischievous and teasing person he becomes.
This deep friendship with Lawrence is central to his role. Abel is one of the very few people who know about Lawrence's unique condition and his vulnerability to spiritual entities. Before Cecilia arrived, Abel used his amateur knowledge of spiritual matters to offer Lawrence blessings and protect him from demons, keeping this secret to avoid being seen as having an occult hobby. His protective instincts are subtle but genuine. He also shares a connection with Hazelita, having been her tutor. Although he initially fled from this responsibility, he eventually develops a fondness for her, impressed by her upright and honest character.
Throughout the story, Abel serves as a confidant and a catalyst. His presence provides insight into Lawrence's past and character. He is a steadying, if sarcastic, presence who helps manage situations involving spiritual danger. He encourages Cecilia to be more careful with her blessings when they adversely affect Lawrence and offers quiet support from the sidelines. While he maintains a lazy and jocular facade, his actions are often aimed at protecting his friends and ensuring their happiness, even as he claims to simply find their struggles entertaining. His development from a reclusive outcast to a playful and loyal friend underscores the transformative power of Lawrence's kindness.
