Description
Hazelita Aldridge is the daughter of the wealthy and respected Aldridge family from the western town. She is a supporting character in the story who comes to play a significant role in the lives of the main protagonists. As the younger sister of Gieselbert Aldridge, she hails from a prestigious background that has afforded her a proper upper-class upbringing.

In terms of personality, Hazelita presents a complex blend of traits that make her both endearing and frustrating to those around her. Despite her noble upbringing, she struggles greatly with socializing with people her own age, often coming across as awkward and shy when first meeting others, as seen when she initially encounters Cecilia. This social difficulty is a central part of her character, though it belies a deeply determined and spirited nature. Her tutor, Abel, famously compares her to a wild boar due to her tendency to charge ahead without thinking things through. She is described as having a flirtatious side but also a serious problem with getting lost, a directional challenge that plagues her even within the confines of the church. She is also noted to possess considerable physical strength, having broken a church door and unintentionally destroyed a table on occasion. Her appearance includes blue eyes and blue hair cut to neck length, and she is often depicted wearing a dress with boots and a cravat.

Hazelita’s motivations and role in the story are deeply rooted in a traumatic experience from her childhood. She was once close friends with the Saint of her town, a girl named Frederica. When Frederica fell ill, the adults surrounding her refused to acknowledge that a Saint could get sick, continuing to use her for their needs and abandoning her when she was no longer useful, which ultimately led to Frederica’s death. This tragic event left Hazelita heartbroken and instilled in her a fierce determination to protect all Saints from being used as tools by others. This is the primary reason she travels to the church where Cecilia and Lawrence live, under the pretense of retrieving her tutor Abel who had not returned home, but her deeper motivation is to ensure Cecilia is safe and not being exploited. She becomes a close friend to Cecilia and appoints herself as a guardian of her happiness, often worried about Cecilia’s wellbeing.

Her key relationships define much of her development. Her bond with Cecilia is central; Hazelita is initially nervous around her but they quickly become best friends, with Hazelita feeling less alone as a result. She also develops a close, if sometimes exasperated, relationship with Lawrence. Initially, she is suspicious of him, fearing he might use Cecilia like the adults did with Frederica. However, after a conversation where Lawrence calls Cecilia his dear family, Hazelita realizes his sincerity and learns to trust him, eventually becoming invested in helping the two navigate their awkward romantic relationship. In fact, she takes on the role of a matchmaker, constantly trying to push the oblivious Lawrence and the shy Cecilia together, often scolding Abel for his lack of concern in the matter. Her relationship with her tutor Abel is also significant. He accompanies her on her journey and lives with her at the church. Although she sometimes dislikes his laid-back, go-with-the-flow personality, she places her trust in him. Abel, in turn, brought Hazelita to Lawrence and Cecilia specifically because he thought they would have a good influence on her and help her move past her trauma. She has a brother, Gieselbert, with whom she exchanges letters.

Throughout her time at the church, Hazelita undergoes clear development. She begins as a wary and socially awkward young woman, but by forming a friendship with Cecilia, finding trustworthy people in Lawrence and Abel, and actively working to create a happy outcome for others, she starts to heal from her past. She is a loyal and energetic presence whose concern for others, combined with her clumsy and forceful ways, makes her a memorable part of the story. Notably, the narrative reveals that Hazelita was one of the people who sincerely loved and prayed for Saint Frederica until the moment of her death, and as a result, she received Frederica’s divine protection. This blessing is said to grant her a long and healthy life without sickness, as well as supernatural stamina and monstrous strength. It also protects her from invisible threats such as ghosts by paralyzing her body to prevent her from stepping into dangerous places. This blessing explains many of her more extraordinary physical feats throughout the series.
