Description
Jun Kagami is a central character in the Mecha-Ude narrative, initially serving as an antagonist before evolving into a significant supporting role. He is the younger son of the Kagami family, a wealthy and influential clan that helped found Kitakagami city. His older brother, Naohito, is the head of the Kagami Group, an organization that wields the power of Mechanical Arms.
Jun is defined by a chronic, congenital condition known as arbitrium deficiency. This illness causes severe physical weakness, chronic fatigue, and respiratory issues, often forcing him to rely on a wheelchair or other mobility aids for support. His physical frailty is a core aspect of his identity and a source of deep-seated insecurity, as he resents being perceived as weak. To manage his symptoms, Jun forms a unique partnership with Ouroboros, an artificial, worm-type Mecha-Ude created by his brother Naohito. When he "derizes," or synchronizes, with Ouroboros, Jun can temporarily suppress the debilitating effects of his illness, allowing him to stand and fight without fatigue. This transformation is visually marked by his white hair and eyes turning a vivid electric green.
Personality-wise, Jun is sassy, blunt, and often cocky, using his sharp tongue as a defense mechanism. He is driven by a powerful need to prove his own strength and worth, a sensitivity exacerbated by his family's history and his brother's dismissive attitude toward him. Jun views Mecha-Ude primarily as tools for achieving his goals, which puts him in conflict with Ouroboros's more loyal and devoted nature. Despite his abrasive exterior, he is not inherently evil. His motivations stem from deep-seated resentment and a desire for agency, particularly after Alma, a rare Trigger Arm Mecha-Ude intended for him, chose another boy named Hikaru Amatsuga instead.
This rejection fuels his initial role as a rival to Hikaru, whom he infiltrates and psychologically torments by mocking his perceived weaknesses. However, Jun's path is complicated when he is manipulated and eventually possessed by a more malevolent Mecha-Ude named Fist, which takes control of his body and represents a significant loss of autonomy. Later in the story, he is freed from this control and emerges as a crucial ally. Notably, he uses Ouroboros's power to revive Hikaru at a critical moment, showcasing a significant softening of his character. By the end of the series, he is positioned as the new head of a reformed Kagami Group, which has transformed from a criminal organization into a vigilante force.
In terms of abilities, Jun's primary power comes from his Mecha-Ude, Ouroboros. Its most notable skill is the ability to sever the bonds between other Mecha-Ude and their human hosts, a power that has significant strategic importance in conflicts. Jun's cunning intellect and strategic mind also make him a formidable opponent and a valuable ally, even when his physical body is at its weakest.
