Description
Laufen is a third-class mage from the magic city of Oisast who appears as a supporting character during the First-Class Mage Exam. She has orange hair typically pulled into a bun and orange eyes, and wears a martial-arts-inspired outfit often compared to a Chinese dress. Her personality is energetic, straightforward, and kind-hearted, though she can be naive compared to more seasoned mages. She is honest and does not hesitate to act on her instincts, even if it means ignoring tactical advice. Her primary motivation during the story is to pass the exam and earn the rank of first-class mage, though her deeper ambitions are not heavily explored. In the first stage of the exam, she forms the thirteenth party together with the veteran mage Denken and the pragmatic Richter. Over the course of the exam, she develops a particularly warm relationship with Denken, who treats her like a granddaughter, buying her donuts and looking after her well-being. This dynamic is noticed by Richter and becomes a source of lighthearted banter. Laufen's most notable ability is a high-speed movement spell called Jilwer, a folk magic from the mountain tribes of the Southern Lands. This spell allows her to move at speeds that the human eye cannot follow, creating the impression of instant teleportation. She is also agile and athletic, capable of using her staff as a melee weapon by extending it like a whip. However, her magic leaves behind traces of mana that can be detected by skilled opponents, and she cannot use Jilwer many times in succession, which limits her endurance. During the exam, she encounters Frieren and learns that her speed alone is insufficient against an opponent with far greater experience and perception. Through her interactions with Denken and Richter, she grows in her understanding of teamwork and trust, even if she does not undergo a major personal transformation. Her role in the story highlights the diversity of magical approaches and the value of intergenerational bonds.
