Description
Badger is a secondary character who appears in the second season of the Vinland Saga anime. He is one of the armed guards employed on Ketil's farm, a large and prosperous estate in Denmark during the Viking Age. The farm is populated by a mix of family members, freedmen, and a large number of slaves, and maintaining order requires a dedicated security force. Badger is part of this group of retainers, which includes his frequent companion, Fox.

Physically, Badger is described as an adult male of about thirty years of age. He has a stocky and heavy-set build, standing 170 centimeters tall and weighing 90 kilograms. His appearance is marked by black hair that falls to his ears and brown eyes. He also has a beard. His name follows the theme of animal monikers used by the farm's guards, a practice that may serve as an affectation or a practical callsign for men in their line of work.

In terms of personality, Badger is presented as a cynical and cruel individual, one who has become desensitized to violence and the suffering of others. He and Fox act as instigators and enforcers, looking for amusement in their downtime. They are portrayed as opportunistic bullies who wield their authority without empathy, treating the lives of the farm’s slaves as worthless. Their cruelty is not born of passion but of a casual, mocking indifference.

Badger's primary motivation is tied to his role as a hired sword. He is a mercenary who sells his service and his capacity for violence. Consequently, he has a vested interest in maintaining the fear and value of death, as his livelihood depends on it. This leads him to react with anger toward anyone who shows no fear of dying, as he perceives their indifference as a threat that devalues the very commodity he trades in.

The most significant event involving Badger occurs early in the season when he and Fox goad Olmar, the young and insecure son of the farm owner Ketil, into committing his first murder to prove his manhood. They select the slave Einar as the intended victim. When Thorfinn steps forward to take Einar's place, showing no emotion, Badger becomes enraged by Thorfinn’s lack of fear. In response, Badger savagely attacks Thorfinn, slashing him repeatedly across the body and face with a knife. The attack is brutal and unrelenting, resulting in Thorfinn losing half of his left ear. The violence only stops with the intervention of Snake, the leader of the farm’s guards, who puts an end to the assault.

Badger’s primary relationship within the story is with his fellow guard, Fox. The two are almost always seen together, working as a pair to carry out their duties and their more malicious entertainments. Fox is the more talkative and manipulative of the two, often acting as the ringleader, while Badger supports him and participates directly in the violence. They both answer to Snake, whose authority they respect, though they are clearly accustomed to operating with a great deal of autonomy. Badger has no meaningful relationships with the farm’s slaves, viewing them only as objects to be used or abused.

Badger does not undergo significant development or change. He serves as a static figure representing the oppressive and dehumanizing system of slavery and the casual brutality that it enables. His role is to embody a specific kind of cruelty—not that of a grand villain, but of a petty, powerful thug for whom inflicting pain is routine and amusing. His actions serve as a catalyst for Thorfinn’s early struggles on the farm, providing a stark example of the violence and hopelessness that define his new reality.

Regarding notable abilities, Badger is a capable and experienced fighter, as expected of a mercenary serving on a wealthy farm’s security force. He is proficient with a knife and shows a willingness to use lethal force without hesitation. However, his specific combat skills are not elaborated upon in great detail; his primary threat comes from his position of authority as a guard over the defenseless slaves, rather than from any unique or exceptional martial prowess.
