Description
Flora Beltrum is the second princess of the Beltrum Kingdom and a central figure in the events surrounding the kingdom's political turmoil. She has a gentle and caring nature, often described as kind and polite, which makes her well-liked by most people. However, she is also notably timid and lacks self-confidence, frequently displaying anxiety about the feelings of those around her and finding it difficult to assert her own will. Having been raised as a sheltered noble, she can be naive about the ways of the world, especially when compared to her older sister, Christina.
Flora's motivations are largely rooted in a desire to help her family and her people, yet her passive personality often leaves her as a pawn in the schemes of others. During a political coup in Beltrum, she is used as a symbolic figurehead by the Huguenot Duke’s faction, who places her at the center of their rebel government, the "Restoration," without her fully understanding that she is being manipulated. Her primary personal motivation becomes a deep-seated wish to properly thank and connect with her savior, Rio.
The role Flora plays in the story is frequently that of a damsel in distress and a catalyst for the protagonist, Rio’s, actions. She is the victim of numerous kidnapping attempts, starting from childhood when she and her sister were abducted from the slums. This initial rescue was the event that brought Rio into the kingdom's service. Later, during a training exercise at the Royal Academy, she is attacked by monsters and falls from a cliff, leading to another rescue by Rio. The political fallout from this incident results in Rio being falsely accused and forced to flee the country, an event for which Flora carries profound guilt and regret.
Flora’s key relationships deeply define her journey. Her bond with her sister, Christina, is significant; while Christina is more politically astute and assertive, she is also consistently protective and kind to Flora, though her instructions often prevent Flora from following her own heart. The most important relationship in Flora’s life is with Rio, whom she later meets in his disguise as Haruto. She has been rescued by him a total of four times, which has fostered a strong sense of gratitude, admiration, and romantic love. Her feelings are complicated by her guilt over her inaction during his persecution at the academy. For a time, she is also officially engaged to the summoned hero, Sakata Hiroaki, as a political arrangement within the Restoration, but this engagement is eventually called off.
In terms of development, Flora begins as an extremely passive and sheltered princess who is largely unaware of the political forces using her. The repeated hardships she endures, including kidnappings, political exile, and witnessing the framing of her savior, force her to gain a clearer understanding of the world and her own position within it. She emotionally evolves from a silent, regretful observer into someone who, despite her timid nature, actively seeks to atone for her past and connect with Rio, eventually remembering him even after a worldwide memory loss event. She and her sister eventually become fugitives, seeking refuge and later asserting her claim to the Beltrum throne. Flora is also noted to possess a notable ability: she is skilled in the use of healing magic.
