Description
Ju Fa, also known by the alias of Great Emperor Akshobhya, is a major antagonist and a member of Lord Tensen, the group of immortal beings ruling over the mysterious island of Kotaku. Ju Fa was created as a puppet, brought into existence over ten centuries ago from a source devised by Rien, the leader of Lord Tensen, during experiments to achieve eternal life. From the very beginning of this existence, Ju Fa was intrinsically paired with another being named Tao Fa, the two being described as two halves of a single whole.

In terms of personality, Ju Fa is characterized by a fierce and aggressive demeanor, displaying a deep-seated hostility toward humanity. This view extends to considering humans as little more than livestock, a perspective even more contemptuous than that held by other members of Lord Tensen. Despite this general animosity, Ju Fa is defined above all by an extreme loyalty and deep, caring devotion to Tao Fa. Their bond, which has lasted for centuries, transcends simple partnership, carrying elements of both a sibling relationship and a romantic couple. Ju Fa cannot tolerate seeing Tao Fa come to harm, even though they possess immense regenerative powers, and this protective instinct is the core of being.

The primary motivation for Ju Fa is the protection and preservation of Tao Fa, as well as the survival of their kind. Ju Fa and Tao Fa were trained by Rien in five forms of immortality, a process that included forced physical maturation and a practice known as Bochu Jutsu, to refine their Tao. Unlike some of their peers who became detached and cruel, Ju Fa and Tao Fa retained a sense of empathy, disgusted by the need to use the island's inhabitants, the Hōko, as fuel for their Tao. Eventually, they reluctantly participated in luring humans to the island to serve as replacements, a necessary evil for their continued existence. This internal conflict, where they must compromise their own lingering sense of right and wrong to survive in a corrupted system, is a central aspect of their character.

Within the story of Hell's Paradise, Ju Fa serves as one of the primary obstacles for the human expedition seeking the elixir of life. As a ruler of Kotaku, Ju Fa possesses partial authority over the island and its monstrous denizens, the Sōshin. Ju Fa's role becomes deeply intertwined with that of Tao Fa, and together they confront several of the main human characters, including the Aza brothers and the swordmaster Gantetsusai. Their initial encounters easily overwhelm the humans, showcasing the vast power gap between the immortals and their adversaries.

Key relationships define Ju Fa's existence, with the bond to Tao Fa being paramount. This connection goes beyond typical partnership, as they were created together and have been inseparable for a millennium. They are also subordinate to Rien, their creator and leader, whose orders and experiments shaped their long, painful history. Their relationship with humanity is purely antagonistic, viewing humans not as equals but as resources to be exploited, though Ju Fa's intense hatred can be provoked when a human displays unexpected ability or threatens Tao Fa. Among the other members of Lord Tensen, Ju Fa and Tao Fa are noted as being different; they are the only pair who seem to genuinely care for one another and retain a sense of empathy, in contrast to the cold indifference of their peers like Mu Dan.

Character development for Ju Fa is explored through tragic backstory, revealing that the cruelty exhibited in the present is not innate but the result of centuries of trauma and manipulation. Ju Fa was not born a monster but was instead a puppet created for a specific purpose and forced into a "mad" world of endless, dehumanizing training. A pivotal moment in development came when the pair despaired at the world around them, recognizing that the other members of Lord Tensen had become insane. To avoid sharing that fate and to protect their bond, Ju Fa and Tao Fa made a silent pact to pretend everything was acceptable, a survival mechanism that only further isolated them. This long history culminates in a desperate act when pushed to the limit in battle: they voluntarily fuse their bodies into a single, monstrous entity, a decision that, while granting immense power, also represents a tragic loss of self and a final, twisted expression of their unbreakable bond.

Ju Fa's notable abilities are a testament to the immense power gained from a millennium of training. As a member of Lord Tensen, Ju Fa possesses complete mastery over Fire-attribute Tao, using it to sense opponents, enhance physical attacks, and launch invisible, destructive projectiles from a distance. Like all Tensen, Ju Fa has the regenerative power of Flower Tao, allowing for the instantaneous regrowth of severed limbs or even the entire body. The only way to permanently kill Ju Fa is to locate the plant ovule within the tanden, the body's core, and destroy it entirely, ideally using the opposing Water-attribute Tao. Ju Fa can also manipulate the Yin-Yang energies to augment power and recover lost Tao, which also results in a physical sex change to match the chi being used. The ultimate ability is the Kishikai transformation, a monstrous form that drastically increases power. For Ju Fa, this transformation is unique as it requires a fusion with Tao Fa, forming a single, massive winged creature with devastating attacks, including sonic shrieks and the release of hallucinogenic spores. However, this form is a double-edged sword, as the immense expenditure of Tao means it can only be maintained for thirty minutes before their bodies are completely exhausted.
