Description
Akane Sawatari is a character from the manga series Chainsaw Man. She is a former civilian devil hunter who becomes a secondary antagonist during the Katana Man conflict, serving as a calm and calculating strategist for the yakuza.

Physically, Sawatari is a young woman of short stature with short blonde hair and distinctive crimson eyes that feature slit, snake-like pupils. She typically wears casual streetwear, including an oversized red hoodie and black shorts, often keeping her hands in her pockets, which may conceal the cost of her devil contract.

Sawatari is defined by her cool-headed and pragmatic personality. She maintains a calm, often expressionless demeanor even in dangerous situations and is highly committed to completing her objectives efficiently. As a skilled manipulator, she successfully rallies yakuza members to her cause. However, this composure can crack when faced with unexpected events, particularly when confronting the overwhelming power of Makima, towards whom she displays visible fear and panic. She is also ruthless, showing little concern for human casualties in pursuit of her goals.

Her primary motivation is to obtain the heart of Denji, who has fused with the Chainsaw Devil. She acts as an agent for the Gun Devil, having made a contract with it. In exchange for supplying firearms to the yakuza and collecting money, she demands the Chainsaw Devil's heart. The full extent of her personal reasons for seeking the heart remains largely unexplained. She is also the individual responsible for transforming the yakuza's grandson into the Katana Man hybrid by implanting him with the Katana Devil's heart.

Sawatari possesses notable abilities stemming from her contracts with devils. Her primary power comes from a contract with the Snake Devil. To activate this devil's abilities, she must perform hand motions, leaving her vulnerable if her hands are restrained. The cost of this contract is her fingernails. She can command the Snake Devil with specific phrases. By saying "Tail," she summons a portion of the Snake Devil to strike a target with its tail. The command "Devour it completely" summons the full body of the Snake Devil to swallow a target whole. This ability is particularly powerful, as the Snake Devil can absorb other devils, such as Himeno's Ghost Devil, and Sawatari can later command the Snake Devil to "Release" the absorbed devil, forcing it to fight on her behalf, though this act causes her nose to bleed as an additional cost.

In the story, Sawatari orchestrates a major assault on Public Safety's Special Division 4 in collaboration with Katana Man. She first appears on a rooftop to resurrect Katana Man after he is seemingly killed by Aki Hayakawa. She later saves him again by having the Snake Devil devour the Ghost Devil, which was overwhelming him. Sawatari oversees the operation to capture Denji's body, but their plan is thwarted when Makima remotely kills most of her subordinates and Kobeni Higashiyama intervenes, forcing Sawatari to retreat with the wounded Katana Man.

Later, when Public Safety raids her headquarters, she confronts Aki Hayakawa again. She attempts to use the absorbed Ghost Devil against him for psychological effect, but Aki manages to defeat it. Following this loss, she is captured by Kobeni Higashiyama. However, before she can be interrogated, a predetermined clause in her contract with the Gun Devil or the Snake Devil activates, causing the Snake Devil to suddenly appear and bite off her head, killing her instantly to prevent information from being leaked.

Despite her mysterious background, Sawatari's corpse reappears later in the series. Makima recovers her body and uses it during the final battle against the Gun Devil, controlling Sawatari as a puppet to fight on her behalf with her head surgically reattached and dressed in a Public Safety uniform.
