Description
Anzu is the titular ghost cat of the 2024 French-Japanese animated film. He is a large, orange, anthropomorphic feline who stands upright and speaks, residing at a rural Buddhist temple called Sousei-Ji. Originally a normal kitten found and adopted by the temple's priest, Anzu is now thirty-seven years old. Instead of dying, he transformed into a bakeneko, a supernatural yokai creature, and has achieved a form of immortality, continuing to live in his current roly-poly state.
Anzu has a personality that blends the mischievous, self-centered nature of a domestic cat with the world-weary habits of an idle middle-aged man. He is willful, capricious, and often sarcastic, delivering deadpan one-liners and arch sidelong glances. He is known to laze about, laugh at his own flatulence, and can be irresponsible with money, once trying to spend a young girl's earnings on his own vices. Despite his selfish streak, Anzu is also upbeat, helpful to the townspeople, and deeply loyal to his friends. Beneath his gruff and carefree exterior, he shows surprising courage and a genuine sense of protectiveness when those he cares about are threatened.
In the story, Anzu is entrusted by Karin's grandfather, the temple priest, to look after the young girl when she is abandoned there by her debt-ridden father. Initially skeptical of Karin, their relationship is marked by clashing personalities and humorous hijinks as his carefree attitude collides with her spirited and headstrong nature. However, as he learns more about her misfortune and grief over her mother's death, he begins to feel for her and becomes her unlikely companion and protector. His role transforms from a reluctant babysitter to a guide who helps her navigate both the human world and the realm of spirits.
Key relationships include his bond with Karin, which evolves from friction to a deep, familial friendship, akin to a bickering older brother and younger sister. He also has a connection with the temple priest, his original owner, and a ragtag band of local yokai and forest spirits, including a giant frog and a tanuki, whom he befriends and invites to parties. He even interacts with the cranky God of Poverty, whom he attempts to strong-arm and trick into helping him.
Anzu's character shows development from a self-absorbed, slothful creature into one who takes responsibility for another person. He sheds his self-indulgence to help Karin undertake a dangerous journey to the Land of the Dead so she can see her mother again, risking himself in a confrontation with the king of the dead, Enma. Ultimately, his actions help Karin find closure, and his home becomes her chosen home as well.
Among his notable abilities, Anzu can speak, walk on two legs, and is strong enough to ride a motorcycle, which he does at high speed despite not having a license. He works various odd jobs, including a part-time masseuse, showcasing his surprising physical dexterity. As a yokai, he possesses the supernatural power to see invisible spirits, gods, and other creatures in the forest. He can also interact with and travel between the material world and the spiritual realm, including leading others to the portal that connects to the Land of the Dead. His appearance and movements, brought to life through rotoscope animation, give him a uniquely expressive and lifelike quality, with his large round face capable of a wide range of exaggerated, cartoonish emotions.
