ONA
Description
Kento Tachibana is the eleven-year-old protagonist of the story, an elementary school student living in a near-future Japan forever changed by a catastrophic nuclear disaster that caused the Earth to merge with a realm of monsters known as daemons. He lives with his mother, Kaoru, as his father is never mentioned or depicted. Kento’s life takes a dramatic turn when he discovers a small, grain-like daemonium particle and decides to raise it for a school project. From this particle hatches a small, dog-like storage daemon whom he names Anna for the sound she makes, and the two form an immediate and powerful bond. When a bounty hunter, summoned by an organization that fears and hunts daemons, attacks the family in an attempt to capture Anna, Kento’s mother is killed while trying to protect him. Overwhelmed with grief, Kento has Anna store his mother’s body in her pocket dimension and sets out on a perilous journey to the Kyushu region, where legend says a daemon capable of rewinding time can be found, hoping to use its power to bring his mother back to life.

Kento’s most defining characteristic is his unwavering, almost naive, kindness and compassion, which stands in stark contrast to the fear and hatred that most humans hold for daemons. He finds daemons, even grotesque or dangerous ones, to be beautiful and adorable, and his first instinct upon encountering one is often to reach out and touch it with genuine fascination rather than fear. This all-loving nature extends to his core philosophy; he is a firm believer in the possibility of a peaceful world where humans and daemons can coexist, and he consistently seeks non-violent solutions, preferring to talk and understand rather than fight. His journey forces him to confront the worst aspects of humanity, including betrayal, cruelty, and exploitation of daemons, yet his fundamental innocence and goodness rarely waver, even as he is horrified by what he witnesses. This innate purity allows other daemons to sense his good-hearted intentions, creating a form of trust that few other humans can achieve. Despite his gentle nature, Kento possesses a determined and courageous spirit, as he is willing to risk his life to save his friends and protect the innocent, ultimately becoming an unlikely but powerful advocate for peace between the two species.

Kento’s most important relationship is, without a doubt, with his daemon, Anna. He raises her with immense love and care, refusing to use a shock collar or any other form of cruel control to make her obey him. Their bond is familial and telepathically reinforced; the daemonium particle lodged in his brain allows him to sense when a daemon is in pain, and specifically to feel Anna’s presence. Anna, in turn, is fiercely protective of Kento, evolving and unlocking new powers when he is threatened. His relationship with other characters is often defined by his effect on them; he meets people like Kaede, a young woman with her own tragic history involving daemons, who becomes a loyal ally and helps him on his quest. He also encounters antagonists, such as the restoration daemon Kiriko, who seeks to manipulate Kento’s grief and desire to see his mother again to turn him against humanity. His deep love for his mother, Kaoru, is the primary engine of the plot, but it is also a vulnerability that Kiriko exploits by taking on her form, a deception Kento knowingly accepts for a time out of sheer longing.

Kento undergoes significant development, evolving from a grieving child driven by denial and a desperate wish to undo the past into a mature individual who accepts loss. For a significant portion of the story, he is informed that the daemonium particle in his brain will eventually hatch, an event that will kill him before he can reach adulthood. This ticking clock adds urgency to his quest. The climax of his personal arc occurs when Kiriko tortures him, causing the particle to hatch; the new daemon bursts from his head, killing him instantly. He is subsequently revived by the restoration daemon, but the experience, combined with Kiriko’s manipulations, forces him to confront the futility of his original goal. Ultimately, Kento lets go of his denial, gives his mother a proper and final goodbye, and abandons the quest for personal resurrection in favor of a more selfless mission: stopping a war and saving innocent lives. His journey changes the world; his living example of a peaceful human-daemon bond inspires a new era of cooperation, and he becomes a proponent of peace, giving speeches about harmony between the species.

While Kento is a normal child with no combat training, his key abilities are born from his unique circumstances and personality. The daemonium particle in his head grants him a form of psychic link, allowing him to sense nearby daemons in distress, which is a crucial tool for navigation and empathy. His greatest asset is not a superpower but his profound emotional intelligence and unshakable compassion, which allows him to connect with and even calm hostile daemons where violence would fail. He also displays considerable intelligence and resourcefulness, using his wits to survive dangerous situations and navigate a hostile world. His appearance is marked by the physical manifestation of the daemonium infection: a red mark on the right side of his face and a distinctive white lock of hair on the left, though these features disappear after he is revived from death.
