Description
Harumi Araishu is a central character in FLCL: Shoegaze, introduced as a high school student who becomes the unlikely ally and companion to the protagonist, Masaki Aofuji. Her outward appearance is distinctive, featuring long red hair tied up in several places with various clips, while the lower portion spreads out loosely. She wears the standard high school uniform, which consists of a khaki-colored blazer, a white dress shirt, a loosely hanging pink bow tie, a tan pleated skirt, and white crew socks tucked into a pair of boots she wears while at the Tsuganei Tower.

Personality-wise, Harumi is characterized as eccentric, energetic, and possessing a notable lack of a filter or conventional moral compass. In contrast to the more introverted and cynical Masaki, she acts on impulse without hesitation, engaging in activities such as shoplifting from a home improvement store and even making bizarre offers like letting Masaki drink her urine. Despite her wild and seemingly carefree demeanor, she and Masaki recognize each other as kindred spirits, both feeling like outsiders who do not fit into normal society. Her school records describe her hobby as searching for myself, her special skill as playing the guitar, and note that she is the type of person who is always causing trouble.

Her primary motivation is tied to a deep sense of loss and a lack of belonging. She approaches Masaki after seeing his sketches of ghosts, claiming that a string of mysterious phenomena might be connected to the tower that haunts him. She proposes that they go on a date to gather supplies to build a bomb to destroy the tower. However, her true reason for helping him is later revealed to be selfish yet poignant: she wanted Masaki to use his unique ability to draw a portrait of someone important to her that she lost ten years ago, as no one ever believed her when she spoke of this person, a girl named Natsuki.

The role Harumi plays in the story is that of a catalyst for Masaki, pushing him into action and adventure. While her pink hair and manic energy initially evoke comparisons to the series iconic character Haruko, Harumi subverts expectations by being a genuinely vulnerable and authentic figure rather than a manipulator. Her backstory is the most defining aspect of her character arc. After being shot by a sniper while in the tower, Harumi transforms into a pink ghost. In this spectral state, she is transported to another dimension and sees a vision of her past, revealing that she was originally a boy who was traveling to Mars with his family. A space-time rift caused by the events of a previous season separated this boy from his family, and he woke up on Earth as a five-year-old girl, an event that left her with a persistent feeling of never belonging.

Her relationship with Masaki is the emotional core of the narrative. What begins as a partnership of convenience deepens into a genuine connection. When Masaki s N.O. power activates and the two worlds begin to merge, the pair shares a kiss before Masaki s power consumes the merging manifold. In the aftermath, Harumi s presence is completely erased from Masaki s world. However, Masaki later manages to cross over to an alternate universe, where he finds Harumi living as a boy on Mars. While this version of Harumi initially does not remember him, Masaki shows him his sketchbook, confirming that their bond transcends dimensions. In terms of notable abilities, Harumi does not possess supernatural powers in the same way other characters do. Her special skill is listed as playing the guitar, and her most notable trait is her fearless, almost reckless determination to follow through on her plans regardless of the consequences.
