Description
In FLCL: Grunge, Haruko Haruhara arrives in the mob-controlled town of Okura, a setting distinct from Mabase. Her appearance in this iteration features a notable change, as her signature pink hair is styled with an ombré effect, transitioning from a dark pink at the roots to bright orange at the ends. True to form, she is an energetic and spontaneous figure whose arrival throws the local order into chaos, though her methods are significantly more ruthless in this story.

Her background in Grunge frames her as an investigator for the Galactic Space Patrol Brotherhood, but her actions are driven by a singular, obsessive motivation: to capture the immense power of the space pirate lord, Atomsk. To achieve this, she adopts a series of calculated disguises and deceptive roles. She infiltrates the local infrastructure by becoming the leader of the Kenshibishi Yakuza faction and simultaneously poses as the love interest of the corrupt Mayor Kuroiwa, who is aligned with a rival gang. This duplicity reveals a core aspect of her personality: beneath a manic and silly exterior lies a highly manipulative, calculating, and remorseless individual. She is a dark and unpredictable force, often expressing herself with a wide, shark-toothed grin, and she treats the violent chaos she creates as a means to an end.

In the narrative of Grunge, Haruko serves as the catalyst who shatters the dreary status quo of Okura. Her plan involves staging a mob war as a diversion, allowing her to infect the local Medical Mechanica plant with a virus so she can reach it. Her primary target is the young sushi restaurant worker Shinpachi. Recognizing his latent N.O. abilities, she awakens his power with a kiss, using him as a portal to extract a weaponized version of her signature midnight blue Rickenbacker 4001 bass guitar. Her key relationships are purely transactional; she uses Shinpachi for his power, the yakuza and mayor for access and cover, and shows callous disregard for the lives lost in the ensuing violence, including the death of the character Dainari.

Despite her generally sociopathic behavior, Haruko displays a few fleeting moments that hint at a deeper, if not softer, side. She is shown to have befriended the women at the hostess club where she worked while undercover. Before leaving Okura, she steals the last shuttle tickets from the mayor, giving all but one to these women and handing the final ticket to another character, Orinoko, as a thank you for her help. This suggests a sliver of loyalty, though it does not deter her from her ultimate goal. In the climax, after the chaos she created results in a path to Medical Mechanica, Atomsk eludes her. Undeterred, she is last seen hitching a ride on the Medical Mechanica plant itself as it leaves the planet, chasing Atomsk into space just as she has in other iterations.

Regarding her abilities in Grunge, she retains all of her iconic traits from the franchise. She rides her super-powered, sunglow yellow Piaggio Vespa SS 180, which she can use for flight and incredible speed. She wields her electric bass guitar as a devastating weapon, capable of opening N.O. channels, firing projectiles, and even transforming into an axe or rocket launcher. She also demonstrates superhuman strength and agility, allowing her to fight towering robots and dodge bullets. Additionally, she retains her ability to hypnotize weak-minded individuals to suit her needs. Her time in Grunge represents a particularly callous and direct pursuit of power, fully embracing her role as the antagonistic catalyst who uses an entire town as a pawn in her cosmic-scale hunt.
