Description
Nozomi Tōjō is a third-year student at Otonokizaka High School and the former vice president of the student council. She is the eldest member of the school idol group μ's and serves as a spiritual and emotional anchor for the group. Nozomi has a distinctive, relaxed manner of speaking that incorporates a Kansai dialect, although it is portrayed as a mild affectation rather than a true regional accent. She is deeply interested in fortune-telling and the supernatural; she frequently reads tarot cards, visits power spots, and helps out at the local Kanda Shrine as a shrine maiden. These practices give her a calm, mysterious, and almost all-knowing presence, and she uses her tarot readings as a way to offer guidance and encouragement to others.
Nozomi’s background is marked by frequent relocations during her childhood due to her parents’ work, which made it difficult for her to form lasting friendships. To avoid further disruption, she began living alone while attending Otonokizaka High School, determined to stay in one place. This history contributed to her observant and perceptive nature, as she learned to read people quickly in order to fit into new environments. She developed her fortune-telling skills as a personal tool for connecting with others.
Within the story, Nozomi plays a crucial behind-the-scenes role in the formation of μ's. She was the one who suggested the group’s name and quietly encouraged Eli Ayase to join, eventually joining herself as the ninth and final member. Her role in the group is that of a strategist and stabilizer: she often steps in to mediate conflicts, offer advice, and ensure that the group’s dynamic remains balanced. She is not typically the leader or the most vocal member, but her influence is felt in many key decisions.
Nozomi’s closest relationship is with Eli Ayase, her best friend and fellow student council member. The two complement each other well—Eli is disciplined and serious, while Nozomi is easygoing and playful. Nozomi’s teasing, which sometimes includes playful physical pranks, contrasts with her normally motherly and nurturing demeanor. She also shares a supportive bond with the other members of μ's, especially those in her sub-unit lily white, Umi Sonoda and Rin Hoshizora.
Over the course of the anime, Nozomi undergoes a subtle but meaningful development. Initially content to act as an observer and supporter, she gradually allows herself to become more emotionally invested in the group’s success and to openly express her own desires. Her decision to join μ's full-time marks a turning point where she moves from being a detached advisor to an active, committed member. She learns to trust others and to accept that she, too, deserves to shine.
Nozomi’s most notable ability is her fortune-telling with tarot cards, which she uses not only for fun but also as a sincere way to help her friends. She has a strong intuitive sense and a talent for reading the mood of a situation. Despite her mystical interests, she is practical when needed, handling student council duties alongside Eli and contributing to the group’s logistical planning. Her combination of wisdom, warmth, and playful mischief makes her a unique and integral part of μ's.
