Description
Arsene Lupin III is a fictional character who serves as the protagonist of the Lupin III franchise. He is acknowledged as the world's most wanted gentleman thief and the grandson of the iconic Arsène Lupin, the famous gentleman thief created by French author Maurice Leblanc. His goal in life is to continue his grandfather's legacy through a life of elaborate heists and adventure.

The character's background and personality have significant variations across different media. In the original manga by Monkey Punch, Lupin is portrayed as a cocky, crude, and largely remorseless criminal mastermind who leads the Lupin Clan, an underworld organization with global reach. This version is known for committing serious crimes including murder, and he often uses women for his own gain without regard for their well-being. However, for the long-running anime series, his personality was drastically softened and altered to make him more appealing to a broader audience. In the anime, Lupin becomes a fun-loving, chivalrous goofball who, despite being a thief, often goes to great lengths to right injustices and help those less fortunate, particularly attractive women. He maintains a surface facade that sometimes appears incompetent or silly, but this disguises a brilliant and imaginative mind capable of planning heists that seem impossible. His love for the thrill and challenge of the heist is often greater than his desire for the actual treasure; he is frequently unbothered when the prize slips through his fingers, sometimes even giving it away intentionally to someone who needs it more.

In his role within the story, Lupin is the leader of a small, informal gang of specialists. He typically takes it upon himself and his group to foil other, more violent criminals and leave them for the authorities. Despite the criminal nature of his activities, he has a strict personal code in the anime that discourages killing; he generally avoids murder and will only use lethal force when his life or the lives of his friends are directly threatened. His signature firearm is a Walther P38.

His key relationships are central to the series. His closest and most trusted partner is Daisuke Jigen, a cool, expert marksman with whom he shares an inseparable bond. Another crucial ally is Goemon Ishikawa XIII, a modern-day samurai and master swordsman who wields the legendary Zantetsuken sword, though his loyalty is sometimes more conditional. His dynamic with Fujiko Mine is complicated and serves as his most significant weakness; he is perpetually infatuated with the beautiful femme fatale, who frequently betrays him for her own gain, yet he will always drop everything to come to her aid. Finally, his relationship with Inspector Koichi Zenigata of Interpol is unique. Zenigata has dedicated his life to capturing Lupin, but Lupin views him as a respected rival and even a friend, affectionately calling him "Pops". This respect is mutual, and Zenigata has vowed never to kill Lupin, with Lupin in turn going on vengeful quests when the Inspector is seriously harmed.

The character has shown development over time, primarily marked by the stark contrast between his original manga characterization and his more heroic and lighthearted anime persona, which was solidified when directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahato took over the first television series. While later anime series and films sometimes reintroduce elements of his roguish nature, the charming, fun-loving gentleman thief remains the standard portrayal. Lupin is also a skilled race car driver who enjoys hobbies such as fishing, gambling, and fine dining when not on a job.

Lupin possesses a remarkable array of notable abilities. His mastery of the art of disguise is so complete that he can flawlessly impersonate any person, including close friends and family, after minimal observation. He is also a skilled sleight-of-hand artist who loves using gimmicks, such as explosive confetti cigarettes or bubble gum that turns into plastic explosive. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of various sciences and history, speaks multiple languages, and is incredibly agile and flexible. He frequently uses an array of gadgets, from hidden grappling hooks to various spy devices, to aid in his heists. Despite his generally average physical strength, he is a talented driver, motorcyclist, and pilot, and is a celebrated competitor in international racing events.
