Description
Ken Washio, designated G-1 and known as Ken the Eagle, is the leader and primary tactical expert of the Science Ninja Team. Orphaned at a young age, Ken grew up believing his father, Kentaro Washio, perished in a plane crash when Ken was four years old. After his mother died of illness when he was eleven, Ken was taken in by Dr. Nambu and began his intensive training as a Gatchaman at age thirteen. To maintain his civilian cover while working with the International Science Organization, Ken lives in his late father's office at a small airfield and works as an aircraft test pilot and airmail delivery courier.

In his role as the team's leader, Ken is typically calm, collected, and highly strategic, often operating by the book and suppressing his personal feelings for the sake of the mission. However, when faced with a crisis, he can become emotionally swept up and vulnerable, requiring the support of his teammates to regain his composure. He is an avid reader and a skilled martial artist, holding ranks in disciplines such as judo, karate, kendo, and aikido. Despite his heroic qualities, Ken has notable flaws: he is notoriously careless with money, frequently forgetting to pay his tab at the team’s Snack Jun and relying on the youngest member, Jinpei, to cover his expenses. He also tends to avoid romantic relationships, remaining largely oblivious to the feelings of his teammate Jun, to whom he is a consistent subject of affection.

Ken's primary motivation is a strong sense of justice and a determination to stop the criminal organization Galactor, a drive that is deeply personal. The defining tragedy of his life is the seeming loss of his father, and his character arc reaches a pivotal moment with the revelation that his father did not die but instead faked his death to infiltrate Galactor as the mysterious masked pilot known as Red Impulse. Ken reunites with his father in episode 53 of the original series, only for Red Impulse to immediately sacrifice himself to destroy a Galactor V2 missile. This loss plunges Ken into a deep depression and a rage-fueled desire for revenge, an emotional crisis from which he must be pulled back by his team. This event hardens his resolve but also deepens his emotional complexity, making him more prone to darkness as the series progresses.

His relationships with the other team members are central to his development. His dynamic with Joe Asakura, G-2 and the Condor, is one of frequent clashes. Their differing personalities and tactical approaches put them at odds, yet this friction is built upon a foundation of deep mutual respect and trust forged by their shared upbringing under Dr. Nambu. Ken regards Joe as one of his closest friends and allies. With Jun the Swan, G-3, Ken maintains a professional respect and remains largely unaware of her romantic interest, though their bond is significant. Dr. Nambu serves as a surrogate father figure, having raised and trained Ken, though Ken is not afraid to act as a Commander Contrarian, making final decisions based on his own moral compass rather than blindly following orders.

As the leader of the Science Ninja Team, Ken pilots the G-1, a single-engine light jet that transforms into a high-speed fighter and can dock with the team's mothership, the God Phoenix. His signature weapon is the Birdrang, also known as the Bird Run, a razor-sharp, rocket-propelled boomerang shaped like an eagle. In later series, he wields other weapons, such as the Shock Gun and the Gatchaman Fencer, a collapsible sword capable of channeling immense electrical energy. Among his Science Ninja Techniques are the Bird Flash, which disorients foes with a blinding light, and the Kage no Bunshin, which uses holographic technology to create duplicates of himself. In the series Gatchaman Fighter, the use of the Hypershoot ability with his Gatchaspartan mecha causes Ken to suffer from cellular degeneration, adding a layer of physical sacrifice to his ongoing battle.

Different adaptations present variations on Ken Washio. The 1994 OVA features a version with short hair and a primarily blue Bird Style costume. The 2017 series Infini-T Force depicts a 24-year-old Ken with short grey hair and stubble. This version is portrayed as the sole survivor of his team in a dimension where his world's Dr. Nambu became a corrupted antagonist, and he ultimately chooses to remain in that reality as its sole protector, fighting in memory of his fallen comrades. In the cancelled Imagi film project, concept art showed variations of his costume, ranging from more armored aesthetics to designs closer to the original series.
