Tori Matsuzaka

Description
Tori Matsuzaka is a Japanese actor and model who has also taken on select roles as a voice actor in anime films. Born on October 17, 1988, in Kanagawa Prefecture, he began his entertainment career in 2008 as a model for the fashion magazine Fineboys and made his acting debut in 2009 with the lead role in the tokusatsu series Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. He has since established a prominent career in live-action film and television, winning multiple Japan Academy Film Prizes, including Best Actor for his role in The Journalist.

While Matsuzaka is not primarily known as a voice actor, his work in anime includes several notable film appearances. One of his most prominent voice roles is in the 2019 science fiction anime film Hello World, directed by Tomohiko Itō. In this film, he voices the adult version of the protagonist, Naomi Katagaki, also referred to as Sensei, a role that places him as a central character in the story's complex narrative about time travel and virtual worlds. This performance built upon his prior experience in voice acting for animated projects, which includes dubbing the title character in the Japanese versions of the live-action/CGI films Paddington (2014) and Paddington 2 (2018). His voice work also extends to other anime films such as the 2014 fantasy film The Nutcracker and the 2012 CGI film.hack//The Movie: Sekai no Mukou ni.

In 2023, Matsuzaka contributed his voice to the popular Crayon Shin-chan franchise, appearing in New Dimension! Crayon Shinchan the movie: Battle of Supernatural Powers ~Flying Sushi~. He is also set to star in the 2025 animated film 100 Meters, an adaptation of Uoto's manga about track and field, where he voices the character Togashi, a naturally talented runner. This project reunites him with actor Shota Sometani and features a production style that utilizes rotoscoping. Reflecting on his approach to voice acting, Matsuzaka has noted the unique challenges of the medium, describing it as a form of expression distinct from live-action, where the voice must be carefully matched to pre-existing animation and character movements. His selection for Hello World was partly influenced by director Tomohiko Itō's admiration for his vocal performance in the Paddington films.
