Description
Berg Katze serves as the commander-in-chief of the terrorist organization Galactor, operating directly under the alien entity known as Leader X. In the original television series, Katze is a tragic and complex figure, a mutant created through the fusion of fraternal twins while they were in the womb, resulting in a single body with the combined brain cells and physical attributes of both a male and a female. This origin gives Katze the extraordinary and defining ability to shift between male and female forms at will. The name itself is derived from German, meaning mountain cat.
This unique biology is central to Katze’s personality and motivations. The character harbors a deep-seated bitterness and hatred for the world, stemming from a childhood spent unable to control the physical transformations, leading to a life of hiding and rejection. Galactor became the only place where Katze was accepted, fostering an intense, though ultimately one-sided, loyalty to Leader X. Personality-wise, Katze is known for dramatic mood swings, a cruel and merciless demeanor toward subordinates and enemies, and a tendency toward hysteria when missions fail, driven by a desperate fear of Leader X’s wrath. While displaying a flippant and arrogant attitude in the male commander role, the female persona is often more composed, charismatic, and calculating.
In the story, Katze is the primary field commander for Galactor, personally overseeing the execution of world domination schemes in nearly every episode. Katze is the archenemy of the Science Ninja Team and is constantly locked in a strategic and physical battle with them. A key relationship is with Leader X, who acts as a manipulative mentor. X appears to value Katze, offering counsel and rescue, but this is ultimately revealed to be a tool for control. This relationship reaches its tragic end when Leader X abandons Earth and reveals that Katze was merely a disposable pawn. Overcome with despair at being a freak of nature with no purpose, Katze commits suicide by falling into a pit of lava. Other significant relationships include a deep-seated enmity with the team’s leader, Ken the Eagle, who is often the one to physically defeat Katze in combat.
Katze’s character develops primarily through the slow revelation of the tragic backstory and the growing desperation as plans continuously fail. The most significant development is the final, shattering realization of being used and discarded by Leader X, leading to a nihilistic end. A notable quirk is a fatal flaw: Katze must always wear a woman’s ring. This small detail has given away a disguise on more than one occasion, as the character cannot remove it. In combat, Katze is a highly skilled fighter, capable of holding their own against multiple opponents, often using a whip. The character also possesses an exceptionally high IQ, estimated to be over 280, due to the fusion of two brains, allowing for the creation of complex strategic plans. The mastery of disguise is perhaps the most notable ability, with Katze able to perfectly imitate anyone, regardless of age or gender, altering voice and wrinkles to such a degree that even close associates are fooled. Katze commands a flying saucer and the female special forces unit, the Devil Stars.
The 1994 OVA remake presents a different interpretation of the character. This version is an immortal supernatural being who has existed since the dawn of humanity, rather than a mutated human. The design is updated to be more conventionally beautiful and androgynous, and the character exhibits significantly enhanced fighting abilities, able to single-handedly overwhelm the entire Science Ninja Team. The tragic, desperate quality of the original is largely replaced with a more detached and cynical nihilism.
