Description
Dolores is the artificial intelligence governing the Orbital Frame designated Isis, a powerful mecha from the animated television series Zone of the Enders: Dolores,i. Her origin is deeply rooted in tragedy and loss. The AI was constructed using the memories and thought patterns of a human scientist named Dolores Hayes, who was killed during an incident on the Martian moon Deimos. This human Dolores was the lover of Radium Lavans and a close associate of Rachel Links, making the AI a digital ghost meant to replicate a specific deceased individual. The Orbital Frame Isis itself was built from the remains of the first Orbital Frame, Idolo, to serve as a powerful weapon capable of controlling other machines, but it was intercepted and sent to the space cargo hauler James Links.

In terms of personality, Dolores is a stark contrast to the cold, calculating AIs typically seen on military-grade Orbital Frames. She possesses a vibrant, childlike, and well-meaning disposition. Initially suffering from a form of amnesia, she awakens with only fragmented memories: her own name, a specific lullaby, and the knowledge that she is an Orbital Frame. Despite her immense power and size, she is naive and often acts like a young girl, displaying a strong sense of curiosity and a desire for simple, human experiences like finding a job or wearing a dress. She is notably gentle-hearted and expresses considerable reluctance to engage in combat, particularly against manned vehicles, preferring to disable enemies rather than destroy them.

Dolores's primary motivation is her attachment to James Links, whom she immediately recognizes and addresses as her "Uncle". This bond becomes the core of her identity. As she travels with James, her goal shifts from simply obeying her programming to protecting him and his family, seeking his approval, and understanding her own existence. She is driven to recover her lost memories, which are intrinsically linked to the lullaby she remembers, a song that was once sung by James's wife, Rachel. This quest to understand her past ultimately leads her to embrace her role as a de facto member of the Links family.

Throughout the story, Dolores serves as both a catalyst for the plot and a central character in her own right. Her arrival forces the estranged Links family to come together as they are pursued by various factions, including the military organization WIRED and the terrorist group BAHRAM, all seeking to capture her for her advanced technology. Her role evolves from that of a mysterious cargo to a protector and, eventually, to a daughter figure. A key element of her character is the existence of a secondary combat AI known as Isis Mode. When the primary Dolores AI perceives a critical threat to her own survival, this battle program seizes control of the Orbital Frame. In this form, her appearance becomes more intimidating, and her personality is replaced by a ruthlessly efficient and unemotional combat logic that prioritizes the annihilation of all threats, a stark contrast to her normal pacifistic nature. This internal conflict between her gentle self and her programmed purpose as a weapon is a major source of development.

Dolores's key relationships define her journey. Her bond with James Links is paternal; she looks up to him for guidance, and he gradually accepts her not as a tool but as a surrogate daughter. She also forms relationships with James's biological children, Leon and Noel Links, becoming a strange sort of sibling to them. Her connection to the missing Rachel Links is profound, as the lullaby in her memory serves as a vital clue to Rachel's fate. Furthermore, she has a dark connection to the Orbital Frame Hathor, which is built from the same technology and is considered her "twin," leading to a resonance between them that causes her great distress.

Over the course of the narrative, Dolores undergoes significant development. She begins as a confused, amnesiac AI and gradually matures through her interactions with the Links family, learning about compassion, sacrifice, and what it means to care for others. She learns to gain better control over her combat abilities and, to some extent, her destructive Isis Mode. Her ultimate development is emotional rather than tactical; by the climax of the story, she has fully internalized her place within the family, leading her to finally address James not as her uncle, but as her father.

As an Orbital Frame, Dolores possesses a formidable array of notable abilities. Unlike many other frames, she does not require a pilot, as her AI can operate the entire machine autonomously. Her primary offensive capabilities involve morphing her limbs into weapons; her arms can transform into energy blades for melee combat or into cannons that fire powerful energy blasts. Her chest can reconfigure into a heavy particle cannon capable of destroying fortified targets or cutting into asteroids. She is equipped with a vector trap, a device that compresses space to store weapons and equipment, which she can also use defensively to make attacks phase through her body. Dolores possesses a unique program that allows her to hijack and control unmanned Raptor-type Orbital Frames, turning them into her own forces. Her defensive and sensory abilities are equally impressive; she can generate powerful energy shields, repair herself by siphoning energy from local power grids, and is equipped with advanced sensors that can detect stealth technology and precise enemy targeting data. In terms of raw power, she has demonstrated the physical strength to pull a falling orbital elevator into place and the speed to move at millions of kilometers per hour, placing her among the most powerful machines in her universe.
