Hokuro is a soldier in the Bosse Kingdom, identifiable by the prominent mole on his face. He begins as a low-ranking member of the kingdom's knight order and is deeply devoted to Prince Bojji. His profound loyalty originates from a pivotal encounter at his mother’s grave. While grieving, a young Hokuro received flowers from Bojji, who had intended them for his own late mother. This simple act of kindness moved Hokuro deeply and inspired a lifelong sense of gratitude and admiration.

Driven by his commitment to Bojji, Hokuro taught himself sign language to communicate with the prince, becoming one of the few people who can truly understand him. He is characterized by his earnestness, gentleness, and unwavering dedication to those he cares about. Hokuro’s role evolves significantly as he accompanies Bojji and the swordsman Domas on a crucial journey, serving as a loyal attendant and interpreter. His loyalty is tested severely when Domas betrays the prince and attempts to assassinate him. Hokuro is unable to prevent the act and later confronts Domas, leading to a duel where Domas severs his own hand as penance. This traumatic event forces Hokuro to wrestle with his anger before ultimately choosing a path of forgiveness.

After surviving the assassination plot, Hokuro faces condemnation and is nearly sentenced to death by Queen Hiling for his perceived failure. He is saved at the last moment by Bosse, who is inhabiting King Daida’s body at the time. Following these events, Hokuro is exiled from the kingdom and sets out with a remorseful Domas. Their relationship transforms from one strained by betrayal into a partnership of mutual growth, with Domas training Hokuro in advanced combat.

Throughout his development, Hokuro transitions from a tentative guardian into a more resolute warrior. This evolution is marked by his receipt of a crossbow from Domas, which becomes a symbol of his tactical and physical progression. His abilities primarily include his proficiency with this crossbow and the combat training he receives from Domas. However, his most defining skill remains his self-taught sign language, which is essential for his bond and communication with Bojji. Within the narrative of The Treasure Chest of Courage, Hokuro continues his service, conducting town inspections with Bojji and assisting with royal tasks, further cementing his role as a steadfast supporter of the prince.
