TV-Series
Description
Levi Ackerman serves as the captain of the Special Operations Squad within the Survey Corps and is widely regarded as humanity's strongest soldier. He was born in the lawless Underground City to Kuchel Ackerman, a prostitute, and lost his mother at a young age. After her death, he was taken in by his maternal uncle, Kenny Ackerman, a notorious killer who taught him survival skills, knife fighting, and hand-to-hand combat before abandoning him. Levi later became a thief alongside his friends Furlan Church and Isabel Magnolia. Their criminal activities drew the attention of Erwin Smith, then a high-ranking officer in the Survey Corps, who gave them a choice: join the Corps or be turned over to the Military Police. Levi accepted the offer. During an early expedition, Furlan and Isabel were killed by Titans, an event that deeply traumatized Levi and cemented his resolve to follow Erwin’s leadership and ensure that such sacrifices were not made in vain.
Levi’s personality is defined by a cold, stoic, and pragmatic demeanor. He is fiercely disciplined, holds himself and others to extremely high standards, and rarely displays overt emotion. One of his most distinctive traits is an obsessive need for cleanliness and order, which serves as a psychological coping mechanism against the chaos and filth he experienced in his youth. Despite his abrasive and often blunt manner, Levi possesses a strong internal moral compass and genuine empathy, showing care for his subordinates by shielding them from danger and making difficult decisions to protect them. He values human life deeply, especially after learning that Titans were once human.
His primary motivation is to honor the promises he made to his fallen comrades, particularly Erwin Smith, whom he served with unwavering loyalty. Beyond personal vengeance, he is driven by a sense of duty to protect humanity from the Titan threat and to ensure that the sacrifices of those who died in the struggle were meaningful. He does not fight for glory or personal gain but sees his strength as a tool to be used for the greater good.
Within the story, Levi serves as the bodyguard and potential executioner of Eren Yeager, who possesses the power of the Attack Titan and the Founding Titan. He leads the elite Special Operations Squad—initially composed of Petra Ral, Oluo Bozado, Eld Gin, and Gunther Schultz—on high-risk missions. His role extends beyond combat; he acts as a voice of moral authority and strategic counsel among the Corps leadership. He plays a pivotal part in many key events, including the retaking of Wall Maria, the battle against the Beast Titan, and the final confrontation to stop Eren’s global genocide.
Levi’s key relationships are deeply influential. His bond with Erwin Smith is one of absolute trust and loyalty; he regards Erwin as the only person capable of making the harsh decisions necessary for humanity’s survival and later carries out Erwin’s final request to defeat the Beast Titan. He holds a complex, respectful connection with Mikasa Ackerman, who shares his bloodline and combat instincts, though he maintains a more controlled demeanor compared to her emotional drive. He entrusts strategic decisions to Armin Arlert, recognizing his sharp intellect. His interactions with Eren are marked by authority and caution; he initially acts as a stern guardian but later opposes Eren’s radical path. He harbors no hatred for Reiner Braun or Pieck Finger as individuals, viewing them as enemies out of circumstance, and treats Gabi Braun with measured wariness.
Over the course of the series, Levi undergoes significant development. He starts as a hardened survivor who struggles to trust others after the loss of his first friends. Through his service under Erwin and his command of successive squads, he gradually opens up, learning to invest emotionally in his comrades despite the constant threat of loss. The death of Erwin forces him to accept a leadership role beyond combat, and he ultimately takes responsibility for carrying the Corps’ mission forward. His decision to save Armin over Erwin during the battle for Shiganshina marks a turning point where he chooses to free Erwin from his burdens rather than selfishly keep him alive.
Levi’s combat abilities are unmatched within the series. He possesses superhuman speed, reflexes, and strength, attributes partially explained by the latent powers of the Ackerman bloodline, which grant him enhanced physical capabilities when protecting someone he is bonded to. He is a master of the Omni-Directional Mobility Gear, performing maneuvers that no other soldier can replicate, such as spinning his entire body to slash Titans from multiple angles in seconds. His hand-to-hand combat skills, refined through Kenny’s brutal training, allow him to dispatch trained opponents with ease. He is also a highly perceptive tactician, able to analyze battlefield conditions instantly and exploit enemy weaknesses. Despite sustaining grievous injuries later in the story—including the loss of several fingers and permanent damage from an explosion—he continues to fight with near-peak efficiency, embodying resilience and unwavering resolve.
