Description
Kisaragi Amatsuyu, known to nearly everyone by his nickname Joro, is the protagonist of the story. He is a second-year high school student who serves as the secretary of the student council. Physically, Joro is described as having a plain and unremarkable appearance with black hair and gray eyes, standing at 167 centimeters tall. This common look is a key part of how he presents himself to the world, intentionally cultivating an image of being an average, kind, and helpful person who does not stand out in any particular way.

However, this pleasant exterior is a carefully constructed facade. Joro’s true personality is the opposite of his public persona; he is manipulative, cunning, perverted, devious, and self-absorbed. He maintains his "nice guy" act specifically to build trust with his peers, whom he views as potential members of a personal harem. His internal monologue is filled with brutal sarcasm and cynical observations, a stark contrast to the polite, slightly dense boy he pretends to be. This duality is so pronounced that he can switch between the two personalities in an instant, a shift often signaled by brushing his bangs over his eyes to cast a shadow over his face. Despite his scheming nature, he is fundamentally not an evil person. Deep down, he genuinely treasures his friendships and is capable of great selflessness and courage when those he cares about are in trouble, even if he would never admit it.

Joro’s primary motivation at the start is to live out a "romantic comedy protagonist" high school life, culminating in his "perfect harem plan". To this end, he attempts to make two girls fall for him: his childhood friend Aoi Hinata, nicknamed Himawari, and the student council president Sakura Akino, nicknamed Cosmos. His scheme backfires spectacularly when both girls ask him out on separate dates, not to confess their love for him, but to ask for his help in winning the heart of his best friend, the popular baseball captain Taiyou Ooga, known as Sun-chan. Thwarted and desperate, Joro is then confronted by Sumireko Sanshokuin, a quiet library aide he calls Pansy. She reveals she knows his true, unpleasant personality and declares that she is the only one who actually loves him, forcing him into a reluctant alliance. His role in the story becomes a constant battle to regain control of his social and romantic life, often being used as a tool by others while secretly trying to manipulate outcomes for his own benefit.

His key relationships drive the plot and force his development. His friendship with Sun-chan is central, as Sun is both his closest friend and his primary rival for the affections of the girls he desires. This bond is severely tested when Sun, jealous of Joro’s connection with Pansy, orchestrates a bullying campaign against him. The confrontation that follows becomes a turning point, forcing Joro to act on his genuine feelings rather than his selfish calculations. His relationship with Pansy is the most complex; he hates her for her sharp tongue and her refusal to accept his fake persona, yet she is the only person who sees and accepts his true self, making her an indispensable partner in navigating the series of love polygons that ensue. The other girls, like Himawari and Cosmos, initially see him only as a helpful tool, a role which gives him his nickname "Joro," meaning "watering can"—something useful for helping others grow but not valuable in itself.

Over the course of the story, Joro experiences a gradual but significant development. Initially driven purely by self-interest, he begins to show genuine care for the feelings of others, even those he intended to manipulate. His experiences, particularly the betrayal by Sun-chan, force him to confront his own insecurities and low self-esteem, which are the root cause of his manipulative behavior. While his scheming nature never fully disappears, he learns to reduce his manipulative habits and act with more sincerity, especially in defending his friends. This growth culminates in his final challenge against Yasuo Hazuki, nicknamed Hose, a "perfect" rival from another school, where he must use all his cunning not for personal gain but to protect Pansy from an unwanted relationship.

His notable abilities stem directly from his personality. His primary skill is his ability to switch between his "Jekyll and Hyde" personas at will, which allows him to deceive almost everyone around him. He is also highly genre-savvy, able to recognize and even break the fourth wall to comment on the tropes of romantic comedies, which he then attempts to exploit for his own schemes. While not physically strong, he possesses a powerful intimidation factor when truly angered, his sheer force of will being enough to cow others. He also has an easily identifiable tell: he fidgets his fingers twice whenever he tries to lie. His greatest nemesis, in a running gag, is a park bench, as every disastrous confession or traumatic event in his life seems to occur on one, leading to a deep-seated fear of the object.
