TV Special
Description
Monkey D. Ruffy is the energetic and determined captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. Born in Foosha Village in the East Blue, he ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi as a child, a Devil Fruit that turned his entire body into rubber while taking away his ability to swim. His dream is to find the legendary treasure One Piece and become the Pirate King, a goal inspired by his childhood idol, the pirate Shanks. Ruffy’s defining trait is his carefree and optimistic personality. He is impulsive, often acting on instinct rather than logic, and has an enormous appetite that frequently leads to comical situations. Despite his simpleminded appearance, he possesses a sharp intuition and an unshakable moral code. He becomes serious and fierce whenever his friends or innocent people are threatened, showing deep loyalty and a refusal to abandon anyone in need.
In the story of One Piece: Episode of Skypiea, Ruffy and his crew arrive on the sky island of Skypiea after a perilous journey up a massive ocean current. His main motivation throughout the special is to explore the sky island and find adventure, but he quickly becomes drawn into a conflict with the tyrannical ruler of Skypiea, the self‑proclaimed god Enel. Ruffy’s role is that of a liberator and protector. He stands up against Enel’s oppressive reign, fighting to save the people of Skypiea and free his crewmates who have been captured. He also forms key relationships with the sky islanders: he befriends the former god Gan Fall and earns the respect of the Shandian warrior Wyper, both of whom eventually ally with him against Enel. Ruffy’s bond with his own crew is central, especially with Nami, Zoro, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, and Robin, whom he leads with unwavering confidence.
Ruffy does not undergo major character development within the Skypiea special itself, as it is an abridged retelling of a larger arc, but his existing traits are reinforced. He shows creativity in combat, using the rubbery nature of his body to launch powerful stretched attacks such as the Gomu Gomu no Pistol and Gomu Gomu no Rocket. His rubber body grants him immunity to electricity, which proves crucial against Enel’s lightning‑based powers. At this point in the series, Ruffy has not yet awakened his Gear techniques or Haki abilities. Instead, he relies on raw physical strength, agility, and his resourceful application of rubber powers. He also exhibits great endurance, surviving falls from great heights and blunt‑force trauma.
Overall, Ruffy in the Skypiea special is portrayed as a fearless, freedom‑loving pirate who fights not for treasure or glory but to protect his friends and uphold his own sense of justice. His infectious cheerfulness and stubborn resolve make him the heart of the Straw Hat crew and the driving force behind their victory over Enel.
