Description
Goro Yatagarasu, often called Yata, is an officer with the International Criminal Police Organization who serves as the assistant to Inspector Koichi Zenigata. Introduced as a young and relatively inexperienced recruit, he is assigned to support Zenigata in his relentless pursuit of the master thief Lupin III. Despite his junior position, Yata takes his duties with the utmost seriousness and possesses a sharply defined, idealistic sense of justice that initially leaves little room for ambiguity.

Yata's personality is marked by his youthful enthusiasm and a strict, by-the-book approach to law enforcement. This rigid adherence to protocol often puts him at odds with the more seasoned and unorthodox methods of his superior. He initially struggles to understand why Zenigata would dedicate his entire career to chasing a single criminal, viewing it as a professional dead end, and he is not afraid to question Zenigata’s decisions or accuse him of showing leniency toward Lupin. This eagerness and lack of experience make him prone to falling for Lupin's elaborate deceptions, a fact that is humorously underscored when his service sidearm is repeatedly destroyed during confrontations with the thief.

Despite his criticisms, Yata possesses a deep and abiding loyalty to Zenigata. His respect for the inspector forms the core of his motivation, keeping him by Zenigata's side even when the assignment seems thankless or detrimental to his own career. Over time, Yata's perspective begins to shift. His initial skepticism evolves into a more nuanced understanding of Zenigata's unwavering commitment, and he becomes a staunch defender of his mentor, particularly when Zenigata's superiors question his methods. Yata’s role in the story is thus not just as a helper but as a foil to Zenigata, representing the textbook ideals of a young officer that are gradually tempered by the chaotic realities of chasing Lupin.

Beyond his role in Part 5, Yata appears in the television special Prison of the Past and continues his duties as Zenigata's assistant in Part 6, making him one of the more significant recurring characters outside the main cast. His development throughout these appearances shows his growth from a rigid, by-the-book rookie into a more capable and reliable partner, all while maintaining his fundamental sense of justice. The symbolism of his name reinforces his connection to Zenigata; Goro is a tribute to Gorō Naya, the late original voice actor for Zenigata, while Yatagarasu shares kanji with Hachigoro, an assistant to a previous iteration of the Zenigata character.
