Description
Kiruko is one of the two central characters in Heavenly Delusion, presenting as a capable young woman who works as a bodyguard and handyman in a post-apocalyptic Japan. However, this appearance belies a much more complex truth. Kiruko is actually Haruki Takehaya, a boy whose brain was surgically transplanted into the body of his sister, Kiriko, following a catastrophic incident. This operation was performed by a doctor named Teruhiko Sakota after a man-eater attack left Haruki's original body fatally wounded and Kiriko with a fatal head injury, leading to the desperate procedure to save at least one of the siblings.
Growing up as an orphan in the Funayama Orphanage in Asakusa, Haruki was deeply influenced by his older sister Kiriko, a successful electro-kart racer, and a man named Robin Inazaki, a leader of a group that fought man-eaters who became a mentor to the boy. After waking up in his sister's body, Haruki adopted the name Kiruko, a combination of his and his sister's names, and spent several years working odd jobs and as a bodyguard while searching for answers about what happened to him and the fate of his mentor. Her distinctive white bomber jacket was a gift from Robin during her time as Haruki.
On the surface, Kiruko is lively, resourceful, and quick-witted, often engaging in easy-going banter and cracking jokes with her traveling companion. She is highly pragmatic and cool-headed in dangerous situations, able to scavenge for supplies in ruins and think tactically during fights against man-eaters. Her personality also carries masculine traits from her past as Haruki, and she is comfortable being vulnerable and forming a deep, platonic bond with Maru that resembles a male friendship.
Beneath this confident exterior, Kiruko struggles with deep-seated insecurities and an insecure attachment style. She has a profound fear of being abandoned and tends to underestimate her own worth, often believing her value is tied to how useful she can be to others as a protector. This "hero complex" stems from her childhood, where she learned to see love and respect as transactional, something earned by being strong and useful, primarily to gain the approval of her idol, Robin. She masks her emotions and can be hesitant to become truly intimate with others, often pushing people away or testing their dedication before letting them in.
Kiruko's primary motivation is to find the doctor who performed her brain transplant, Teruhiko Sakota, and to locate her former mentor, Robin Inazaki, hoping to understand the truth about her past and what happened at the orphanage. She accepts a bodyguard job from a dying woman named Mikura to protect a teenage boy named Maru and escort him to a place called "Heaven," a mission that becomes intertwined with her own search. During their journey, she and Maru form a strong, mutually supportive partnership, fighting the monstrous man-eaters that plague the land. Kiruko uses a powerful, one-of-a-kind ray gun she has named the "Kiru-Beam" to destroy the creatures, while Maru possesses a unique ability to kill them by touching their cores, an act she dubs the "Maru Touch".
The relationship with Maru is central to Kiruko's development. Although Maru falls in love with her, Kiruko initially keeps him at arm's length, eventually revealing her true identity as a boy in his sister's body. Despite this, Maru's feelings do not change, and he continues to care for her, offering unconditional support that challenges her transactional view of love. A pivotal and traumatic event occurs when Kiruko finally locates Robin, only for him to handcuff and sexually assault her, shattering her idealized image of him and causing a profound identity crisis. It is Maru who saves her and reaffirms his love for her as the person she is now, not as Haruki or Kiriko. This experience forces Kiruko to confront her self-worth and begins a slow process of healing, where she learns to accept protection and care from another person.
In terms of abilities, Kiruko is an expert marksman and highly proficient with her Kiru-Beam gun, whose shots are powerful enough to disintegrate targets. She is also a tactical fighter, capable of quickly deducing the abilities of her enemies and using the environment to her advantage. She possesses strong survival skills, having learned to navigate the harsh, ruined world over many years. Following the brain transplant, she has also shown the ability to recall some of her sister Kiriko's memories, adding another layer to her complex identity.
