Description
Eiji Kasai serves as the vice-director of the Jouga Medical Center, a position that reflects his considerable talent and ambition. A distinguished graduate who finished at the top of his class from the private Jouga University, he is also recognized as a highly skilled surgeon. Despite his relatively young age, he is widely viewed as a future candidate for the directorship, a role currently held by the elder Shigetsugu Kushinada.
Kasai is characterized by a strict, sincere, and inflexible personality. His attitude towards others is notably severe, and he holds a particular disdain for the Ochibito, a group within the village's lore. This reveals his core motivation: the safety and preservation of the Kamibito. He is a hardliner who believes that the Ochibito, due to their problematic scent, are a nuisance that must be driven out of the village for the Kamibito to live peacefully.
This uncompromising stance puts him in direct opposition to Shigetsugu Kushinada, who advocates for coexistence between the Kamibito and humans. Kasai’s role in the story is that of an antagonist driven by this extremist ideology. His motivations lead him to commit severe actions; when he discovers that Shigetsugu has handed over a thesis containing the secret of the Kamibito to an outsider named Shunichiro Sakaki, Kasai kills him. He later hires Shunichiro to eliminate Nemuru Kushinada, who shares her father Shigetsugu's idealistic vision, as well as the protagonist Hiroshi Kuzumi, whom he despises. For Kasai, these individuals are obstacles to the Kamibito's security.
His key relationships are defined by conflict. As a subordinate who rejects his superior's philosophy, his relationship with Shigetsugu Kushinada is one of ideological tension that culminates in betrayal and murder. He also has a transactional and ultimately treacherous relationship with Shunichiro Sakaki, using him as a tool for his plans only to be killed by him when he is no longer useful. He also orders another character, Ushio Machida, to monitor Issei Tsumuhana, demonstrating his controlling nature.
Kasai's development, or rather the unfolding of his established character, sees him double down on his hardline beliefs, leading to a tragic end. Physically, he has black hair of ear-length and brown eyes, cut in an apparent adult style. When a war erupts between the Kamibito and humans, he aligns with the hardline Kamibito faction in an attempt to deal with Nemuru Kushinada, who is interfering with their plans. However, this effort fails. After the conflict concludes, unable to accept the outcome, he commits suicide, believing fully in the righteousness of his ideal that the Kamibito should be submerged and isolated.
