Description
Kōrin, introduced as a young servant assigned to assist Shūrei Hong in the imperial palace, is a girl whose life was forever changed by the war that ravaged Saiunkoku eight years before the main story. She was found collapsed in front of the house of Taiho Sa, the powerful minister of the Sa clan, who took her in and adopted her. This act of kindness fostered in Kōrin a deep sense of loyalty and gratitude toward Taiho Sa, whom she looked up to as a father figure. Her devotion to him was so strong that she was willing to carry out his orders even when those orders meant harming Shūrei. When instructed to poison Shūrei, Kōrin obeyed, but the guilt and conflict she felt afterward led her to attempt to sacrifice her own life by drinking the same poison, hoping to atone for her actions.
Kōrin's personality is defined by a mixture of earnest devotion, internal turmoil, and a desire to do good despite her past mistakes. She is not naturally malicious; rather, she is a young girl caught between her gratitude to her adoptive father and her growing awareness of right and wrong. After Taiho Sa's death, she was sent to live with his wife, and she later traveled back to the capital with Ensei to deliver crucial information about the situation in Sa Province, showing a willingness to help and a sense of responsibility.
Her role in the story begins as a secondary antagonist of sorts, acting under Taiho Sa's direction, but she evolves into a more sympathetic figure who seeks redemption. Key relationships include her bond with Taiho Sa, her interactions with Shūrei and Seiran (who were targets of her earlier actions), and later her connection with Eigetsu. The search context notes that she shows signs of romantic feelings for Eigetsu, though her manner toward him is often a mixture of concern, annoyance, and exasperation. When Eigetsu's bond with his other self weakens, he leaves Kōrin with a confession of love and a kiss, marking a significant moment in her personal development.
Kōrin does not possess extraordinary combat or magical abilities; her notable trait is her resilience and capacity for change. She is a character who learns from her mistakes and strives to make amends, growing from a pawn in political schemes to a person who can act on her own conscience. In terms of appearance, she is a teenage girl with green eyes and black hair, often depicted in a traditional dress. Her journey is one of redemption and finding her own place in the world beyond the shadow of Taiho Sa.
