Description
Dylan Gould is the chief executive officer of Hotchkiss Gould Investments, a position that affords him immense wealth and influence. A collector of exotic cars, this hobby serves as a personal escape from the pressures of his professional life. His background is deeply entwined with the alien conflict long before the events of the story unfold. His father was an accountant for NASA who was approached by the Decepticon Soundwave in the early 1970s. Tasked with manipulating budgets to make further moon landings financially unviable, the elder Gould concealed the discovery of a hidden spacecraft on the lunar surface. As a child, Dylan was brought into this arrangement, meeting Soundwave in 1979 as his father prepared him to become the next liaison to the Decepticons. Upon returning to Earth in 2007, Soundwave found that the younger Gould had fully inherited his father's role, operating the family company and using its resources to maintain the secrecy surrounding the moon.

On the surface, Dylan presents the image of a charming, sophisticated, and generous businessman. He poaches Carly Spencer from the British Embassy to be his assistant, nicknaming her "my duchess" and bestowing expensive gifts upon her, including a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. He uses his connections to secure a job interview for her boyfriend, Sam Witwicky, at a company where he sits on the board of directors. This appearance of generosity, however, masks a deeply manipulative and self-serving nature. Beneath the suave exterior lies an egoistic man whose primary drive is the acquisition of power, a desire that surpasses the simple wealth that motivated his father. He is a calculating opportunist who justifies his actions through a cynical philosophy: when a conflict is not your own, you align with the side that is going to win.

Dylan's central motivation is survival and dominance. He explains that he did not ask for his role but inherited it as a "client." He seeks to guarantee another forty years of life and a position of authority in the world that follows the Decepticons' conquest. This path, he believes, will secure his freedom while the rest of humanity is enslaved to rebuild the planet Cybertron. His ultimate goal is not mere wealth but the tangible power to rule over others, a craving that Soundwave recognized in him from childhood. He is a traitor to his own species, viewing humanity's subjugation as an acceptable price for his personal safety and status.

Within the story, Dylan serves as the primary human antagonist and a dark foil to Sam Witwicky. Initially appearing as a potential romantic rival, his true nature is revealed when he orchestrates Sam and Carly's capture. His assistant's car is unveiled as the Decepticon Soundwave, who takes Carly hostage. Dylan then forces a Decepticon watch onto Sam's arm, which transmits pain and is designed to extract information about the Autobots' battle plans. He uses this intelligence to order Starscream to destroy the spacecraft carrying the Autobots, apparently killing them. Later, he takes Carly to his penthouse in a Chicago high-rise, which becomes a vantage point for the Decepticons' destruction of the city. When the Autobots return and the battle turns, Dylan is tasked with reactivating the central Control Pillar for the space bridge. In his final confrontation with Sam, he is electrocuted after being knocked into the pillar, meeting his end while desperately clinging to his pursuit of power.

Key relationships define his role. His partnership with Soundwave is the most significant, spanning decades from his childhood introduction to the Decepticon. Soundwave respects Dylan's ambition, and in turn, Dylan commands a degree of authority unusual for a human collaborator, even ordering Soundwave to execute captured Autobots. He also has a possessive and manipulative relationship with Carly, whom he hires specifically to monitor her connection to Sam. His relationship with Sam is one of antagonism and a twisted mirror; while Sam is heroic and self-sacrificing, Dylan is selfish and calculating, representing what Sam could become if driven by ambition rather than conscience. His dealings with other Decepticons like Megatron are more strained, with the Decepticon leader showing him little respect, referring to him as an "insect operative."

Dylan's character sees little redeeming development, instead spiraling further into desperate self-preservation. Initially calm and in control, the scale of the Decepticons' violence visibly disturbs him, though he quickly suppresses this in favor of his own security. When his penthouse is destroyed and the Autobots prove to be alive, his motivations shift from cold, detached business to personal vengeance, demanding the execution of his enemies. This increasing desperation ultimately leads to his death, as he refuses to abandon his path despite being given a chance to stand down. As a human, he possesses no superhuman abilities. His power comes entirely from his vast financial resources, social connections, and his long-standing, privileged access to Decepticon intelligence and technology.
