Description
Gan Takada, often called Gan-chan or known by his heroic alias Yatterman #1, is the main protagonist of the Yatterman series. He is a 13-year-old boy with blond hair and blue eyes, who works at his family’s toy shop but leads a secret life as a champion of justice. As the son of a toymaker, Gan possesses extraordinary mechanical aptitude and is a genius inventor, having completed and refined the Yatter-Wan, a dog-shaped rescue robot originally designed by his father, which serves as his primary support mecha.
In terms of personality, Gan is defined by a strong and uncompromising sense of justice, dedicated to fighting evil and protecting others. However, his character traits vary notably between adaptations. In the original 1977 series, he is portrayed as a confident and decisive leader. In contrast, the 2008 remake initially depicts him as more carefree, lazy, and somewhat indifferent, often requiring encouragement or a push from his partner to take action, though he matures into a more responsible hero as the story progresses. Regardless of the iteration, he retains a playful side and a fondness for using a kendama, a traditional Japanese toy which he adapts into his primary weapon.
Gan's primary motivation is to thwart the plans of the Doronbo Gang, a trio of comical villains who seek the fragments of the Skull Stone, believing it will lead to the world's greatest treasure. As Yatterman #1, his role is to lead the Yatterman team in protecting these artifacts and preventing the villains from causing chaos. His heroic actions directly oppose the Doronbo Gang, often resulting in their elaborate schemes failing and their subsequent punishment by their leader, Dokurobei.
Central to the narrative is Gan’s key relationship with his partner and girlfriend, Ai Kaminari, who serves as Yatterman #2. Together, they form a formidable battle couple, with Ai often providing the technological expertise and practical sensibility that complements Gan’s mechanical skills. Their bond is a cornerstone of the series, evolving from childhood companions and crime-fighting partners to a married couple in later installments such as Time Bokan: Royal Revival. Gan's relationship with his robotic dog, Yatter-Wan, is also significant, as the machine is both a loyal companion and a powerful asset in battle.
Throughout his story, Gan undergoes noticeable development, particularly in the 2008 remake where he transitions from a reluctant and careless boy into a proactive and reliable hero. In the spin-off series Yatterman Night, set generations later, Gan and Ai are revealed to have been killed in battle by Dokurobei, who later conquers Earth and uses robot clones to impersonate them, tarnishing their legacy. Despite this, their heroic example inspires a new generation to rise up and reclaim the title of Yatterman.
Gan possesses several notable abilities. His signature technique is the Kenda-Magic, where he uses a modified kendama as a versatile tool functioning as a flail, a grappling hook, and sometimes an electroshock weapon. He is also a skilled pilot and mechanic, capable of designing and operating various mecha beyond the Yatter-Wan, including the aerial Yatter-Pelican and the enhanced Yatter-King. His ingenuity in building gadgets and his proficiency in close-quarters combat make him a resourceful and effective hero despite the whimsical nature of his tools.
